Wichita records largest earthquake in at least five years as multiple shakes hit area

[link to www.kansas.com (secure)]

Multiple earthquakes were reported in Wichita Saturday, including a 3.7 magnitude, according to the Kansas Geological Survey.

The 3.7 magnitude, which is a measurement equivalent to the Richter scale, is the largest on record in Wichita in at least the last five years, according to KGS data. It was recorded at 12:47 p.m. with an epicenter near where shakes had previously been reported over the last month.

The KGS also reported a 3.0 magnitude at around 11:42 a.m. and a 2.9 magnitude at around 12:40 p.m. Another earthquake appears to have taken place around 12:52 p.m.

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Kansas Geological Survey has confirmed at least three different earthquakes have shaken Wichita since 11:42 am on Saturday.

All three of these earthquakes are located in E. Wichita near 13th St.

The first earthquake reported was a 3.0 magnitude, followed by a 2.9 magnitude shake at 12:40 pm and then a 3.7 magnitude seven minutes later.

The US Geological Survey also confirmed a fourth earthquake around N. Greenwich and E. 21st St. The USGS said this earthquake happened at 12:52 pm and was monitored as a 3.4 magnitude. To let the USGS know you felt the quake, click here.

Wichita area feels 5 low-intensity earthquakes in 2 weeks
By Margaret Stafford | AP
Dec. 9, 2020 at 3:48 p.m. CST
LIBERTY, Mo. — Five low intensity earthquakes have rattled part of the Wichita area since Thanksgiving, but a Kansas expert on seismic activity says residents of the state’s largest city should not be overly concerned about a larger, more destructive quake occurring there.

A quake with an estimated 2.6 magnitude was felt Wednesday morning in southeast Wichita, where four other quakes have been reported in the last two weeks. The strongest quake was magnitude 3.3 on Tuesday.

Wichita media reported concerned residents calling emergency dispatchers after feeling the quakes and hearing booms associated with them, but no injuries or significant damage were reported. Geologists say damage is not likely in quakes below magnitude 4.0.

Rick Miller, a senior scientist with the Kansas Geological Survey, said the area has a history of low-intensity earthquakes dating as far back as 1919. The affected region is along the western edge of the Nemaha Ridge, an “underground mountain” with several faults.
