Not impressive at all - actually pretty dull. A few years back darpa had a grand challenge dealing with robots performing useful tasks including that one i believe. They failed miserably in doing most basic real world tasks like open a door, grab a hammer and twist a preventor.

This machine does not have hands for a reason - it cannot really orient them or use them to do anything useful. Provably a decade away from being something useful.

Just remember the first self driving grand challenge almost 20 years ago and we still do not have real self driving cars. And robots moving offroad is an infinitely harder task. So do not worry - at least one maybe even two decades away from I am Robot.

You noticed it, too? Yeah, they look like those cheesy (some of them truly brilliant) music videos from the '80s.

But they don't look like that because "they operate on a specific frequency".

It's just because they were programmed with... spatial key points (because they were programmed by people with physical limitations typical for people), and they interpolate (calculate) their movements between those points.

Those interpolated movements then happen faster than the eye (or camera capture speed) can track, and you get that stop-motion impression.

The interesting thing here is... imagine if they weren't programmed by any (physically limited) human being, but were actually allowed to go through the whole process of AI deep learning evolutionary algorithm (not a true General-purpose AI, but definitely a General AI, albeit one in a very narrow field).

Can you imagine what would be the ultimate product of such self-taught AI?

Let me give you a hint: they'd move so fast that you'd see nothing more than a blur right before they punched their robotic fist right through your skull... or you wouldn't even see them as they flew straight into your eye socket, and then right through your skull, if of the (micro-drone) airborne type.

Such AI drones wouldn't even need any weapons to fight squishy human meatbags.

They themselves would be the weapon.

Think along the lines of Judge Dredd's self-guided AI bullet... only one controlled (actually remote-command-unleashed-and-forgot) by an (general-purpose) AGI and used against meatbags.

People (Pentagon) are already thinking along those lines, but current physical limitations (propulsion method, primarily) are still standing in the way of their imagination:

However... once those UFO "Infinite Immovability Drives" are miniaturized enough... only imagination itself becomes the limiting factor... and the AGI with access to such technologies becomes truly unbeatable in every possible sense.

Ordinarily they would spend years programming a robot, but when they can hook up a robot to emulate the motions of a sword expert, then instead of decades to achieve finesse, you get immediate finesse. What could be more dangerous than an ultimate powerful dexterous robot soldier without remote, empathy, morals, and who follows any order?
