Re: Mars Sand Contains Carbonate and Complex Organics.
How many of you understand that carbonate rock is a consequence of biological incorporation of CO2 by living organisms?

White cliffs of Dover is carbonate rock, marble is carbonate rock, all of which is due to fossilized calcific deposition.

Carbonate rock is usually the result of living organisms.
Inorganic carbonate rock not from living organisms is very rare.

quote from the above research article:
"Dust appeared to contain simple organic carbon molecules, perhaps due to atmospheric and surface processes acting to break down more complex organic molecules in rocks. Sand appeared to contain more inorganic carbon in the form of carbonate, even though the rocks nearby do not contain carbonate. Because sand can only travel a limited distance, this suggests that carbonate is present in rocks somewhere in Gale crater that we have not explored yet." (see Plain Language Summary)

Point 3.3.4
"The SAM-derived carbon content differs between Rocknest and Gobabeb/Ogunquit Beach, with more than half of the evolved CO2 in Rocknest attributed to organics and most evolved CO2 in Gobabeb and Ogunquit Beach attributed to carbonates, further suggesting that organics are concentrated in the fine size fraction (Ehlmann et al., 2017; Stern et al., 2018; Sutter et al., 2017)."

I stopped at the bolded above. I remember several times we got Gobi Desert sand in our state, from China. Red sunsets from the sand.

Limestone is carbonate rock, ALL of it fossilized skeletons deposited, all of it once alive.

This is the real issue that goes over most people's head.

They do this when they want more funding.

Carbon is an element, and is found throughout the known universe.

Carbonate in inorganic, so it does not indicate life, but geological processes.

However, stating this does not get you enthusiastic funding.

So, NASA sends out recycled promises of finding "hints of potential life on other planets" news blurbs on the regular.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77837750

Carbonate is one carbon and three oxygens, I think that is the definition of organic. Calcium carbonate is what sea shells are made of.

The takeaway point being that oxygen and carbon need a life form intermediary to produce carbonate precipitate for the most part.
It would be nice if someone with actual legitimate but honest geologic chemistry credentials would step in, the only verification being the acknowledgement that oil doesn't come from dinosaurs digging themselves miles down to die en mass, Because they didn't, oil comes from polymerization of methane and other simple organic gases compressed and polymerized by heat and pressure over millions of years.
Just so You know since dinosaur and predinosaur fossils are not found at depths where oil is found, they remain primarily at or near surface levels except where buried by consequence of repeated volcanic ash deposition.

Those liberal scum love to pick and choose what science they believe in. On Mars dust is life, on Earth, killing a baby is just like sweeping some dust into the trash, as they choose for it not to be life because doing otherwise would make their bellies hurt.

Benzene is not a natural compund. It is a by product of Refinement of fossil fuels. At first thought to be contamination from Russian and US landers, this was later disproved by samples drilled from under the surface.

It means ET's were refining fossil fuels there a long time ago (or maybe not so long ago?).

The missing piece of the puzzle was a molecule called chlorobenzene. In 2014, NASA announced Curiosity had discovered this compound on Mars in 2013, and it just so happens that chlorobenzene is the chemical product of burning carbon with perchlorate.
