Just in: missing Boeing 737-500 in Indonesia: crashed in the sea

I know this airline from when I lived in Indonesia. They're a very cheap and suspect airline. Most Indonesians other than villagers won't fly it. They're known for leasing very old aircraft.

If there was no obvious reason for terrorism, my own working hypothesis would be structural failure from too many cycles without adequate maintenance. Stress cracks happen and propagate under continued operations. Extreme stresses, such as thunderstorms contribute to this as does maintaining cabin pressure, but this one's not likely due to pressurization failure due to the relatively low altitude of 10K feet.

Failure of a wing spar or control failure could cause this accident. Check the obvious before adding factors such as terrorists. How many hours of operation and how many cycles did this aircraft have?

I used to love flying except for the fact I always got a cold when I got back home. Now that the rona is flying around that makes me not want to get back on one. I never factored inthinking about the science that kept the planes up . Thinking about that makes me anxious, then I start questioning how the hell earth stays where it does.

Then my rabbit hole starts to go deeper and deeper.

the 737 is a death plane, something like 4 crashed in a 5 month period, they took them away for years and now they are back and they are cm falling out of the sky again

It's rainy season in Indonesia, weather can be horrible. Similar to Air Asia crash in 2014, probably coupled with mechanical failure. They don't have exactly the highest standards here

A Whole New Generation of Aircraft

The 737 MAX aircraft are not the same as the older 737-700, 737-800 and 737-900 variants. While they share a name, 737s have evolved constantly and enormously from the machines that first flew in the 1960s. Today’s 737s are very different airplanes from those made in the past.
