Humans aren’t only donating their blood for the noble cause. We are grateful to these the weird, prehistoric horseshoe crab as these creatures involuntarily donate their blood every year for the survival of human race. Its blue blood is used in biomedical research to ensure that whatever that gets administered or implanted into the human body is free of possible bacterial contamination. A special chemical in the crab’s blood quickly clots in the occurrence of endotoxins, microbial byproducts that can be lethal, supplying a flawless natural test for purity. Blood of horseshoe crabs is playing a vital role in the development of COVID-19 vaccine due to this potential. When you give blood, you donate about 10 percent of your blood volume, but horseshoe crabs are drained (without the voluntary donation part) of about 30 percent of theirs. A lot of research has been done into creating an artificial substance that could be an alternate for the blood of the horseshoe crab. An artificial alternative to crab lysate (Chemical available in the blood), recombinant factor C (rFC), was accepted as a substitute in Europe, and a handful of U.S. drug companies also began using it.

They did a bit about this on NPR. They use it because of a color change or something when sepsis is present in potential donors. A significant percentage of those crabs don't make it after they're drained, like double digits. They get them when it's mating season, and there is risk of wiping out the breeding population. There is very little to no oversight in this industry!!!! These crabs are drained in the lab then they get sold to conch fishermen to be used as bait in conch traps. They chop up the horseshoe crab and shove them into a bait bag then use the remains as bait to catch conchs. They are supposed to be returned to the location that they are taken from, this is LAW and NEVER happens. Population in serious decline! This has to STOP now

A short distance away, on the Delaware Bay ... is Fortescue, a small fishing "town" that is the Horeshoe Crab Capital of the world.

My grandparents always preferred a drive to the bay over a drive to the shore, and we spent many Sundays looking at the dolphins in the water with the beach literally crawling and piled up with horseshoe crabs.

We were always taught that they were ancient, that they wouldn't hurt us, and to leave them alone.

I'm glad they are special now :)

They used to only be used for fertilizer.

Now, they'll be managed better.

EDIT: I know the population was in decline ... they were being used as bait and fertilizer, but NJ at least put the brakes on that. I know in NJ they will be managed better. They are on it. One thing we've been doing pretty god at here is wildlife nd natural resource management, since we almost destroyed ourselves in the 70s and 80s.
