It's never functioned in any other way. The first of the parasitized parties are always the same in every case. evil people stick together, so long as there are good people to prey on. why fight eachother when there is ample prey? the good would have to be as evil as their enemies are to defeat them. the concept of evil is just the whining of the prey, that it's being preyed upon. in the real world, the crying of the lost sheep, only attracts wolves. the other sheep do not come, they abandon the lost sheep. most lawyers are just predators, courts are slaughterhouses of the rich.
