Re: Landlord question
Our 1 year is about up and they decided they want us to leave. Our lease was up on dec. 31st. They decided to tell us about 10 days ago we have to be out by the 31st this month. I thought it was this month because we signed the lease January 25th last year. So anyway they’ve been coming into our house while we’re gone, like today when they sliced our WiFi router cable and got it switched. Or last night when they came in and looked around and let one of our cats out. They have been shutting the heat off completely and when we threaten them with landlord association or a lawyer they turn it up to like 60. It was 8 degrees out the other night. What would you guys do still move out in time or fight back? Get evicted? I don’t want that on my record..at the same time they have been assholes in the past but this is taking it to a whole new level. We don’t even do anything to them just mind our own. I think they are getting foreclosed on soon and want the whole block out of here
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79988623

I'm a property manager and your post sounds very crazy lol First of all your lease was up Dec 31 and they wanted you out by January 31st. They might have broke the law there at least according to NY renters laws. Depending on how long you lived there determines how much notice a landlord must give you to move. How long have you been a tenant there in total?
 Quoting: Angelseverywhere

Just a year. If it’s all legal it’s pretty fucked up then. They can shut the heat off and let me and my animals freeze? Okie dokie.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79988623

Even a day over 1 year in NY but less than 2 years requires at least 60 days notice...it might be different in PA...

Personally I don't believe in lawsuits, but:
I would set up some hidden cameras in the apartment and talk to a civil lawyer once you have the tangible evidence (recordings). Pretty sure you got a hefty lawsuit there. Also, I'm pretty sure what they are doing is criminal.

Go for it.
Maybe talk to civil lawyer first before dropping money on cameras.

Re: Landlord question
NO LANDLORD IN THE WORLD WANTS tO GET RID OF A DECENT RENTER. It is risky and loses them money.

The real backstory to this:

You decided not to pay because you thought you had the landlord in a bind with the covid non-eviction clauses. Now that the non-evict clauses have been lifted he's kicking your ass out for being stiffed for 8 months.

What you need to do is be grateful you conned the landlord out of 8 months rent and move on to your next sucker you can welsh on.

Re: Landlord question
In NY you absolutely can not enter a person's apartment with out their permission unless it's an absolute emergency like the unit is flooding or there is a dead person in there. It needs to be something serious to do so. Otherwise you need a PTE or Permission to letter statement from the tenant.
 Quoting: Angelseverywhere

We are in pa. Shouldn’t be that much of a difference I would think but who knows apparently.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79988623

Yeah it really shouldn't be...a tenant has a right to privacy. But there are extreme cases when they can enter like I stated but if they do enter you must be notified.

depends on where exactly you are located and what the residential tenancy laws are

in my area, the day a lease expires is the day you are supposed to move out, or sign a new lease
or if the LL takes the rent for the month following the end of the lease
then the tenancy automatically switches to month to month
and the residential tenancy laws for month to month come into effect
and the LL must give proper notice for ending the tenancy

check your local residential tenancy laws

Furthermore, you don't want an eviction on your credit report that is really bad. Like even more than a car repo I think...but I have jerks leaving the apartment like shit and just skipping out with damages and past due rent in the thousands. Like close to ten grand! I mean your NEVER renting in a complex again or really anywhere for that matter....except private landlords...but even then. Forget about anything credit wise basically until you pay it off. In NY I have to wait 31 days to send it to collections. I send it on day 32...

I would recommend searching online for PA tenant laws and rights. Next, I would recommend calling an attorney, or several, for a free consult. Then I would try calling the State office that handles tenant/landlord rights. Document everything and next time, get a copy of your lease. Insist on it. Good luck! I’m a Realtor in FL so I can’t really help but that’s where I’d start. Check the laws, document everything.

You’re very welcome! Most attorneys will give a free initial consult and the laws should be online. It seems shady, if everything you are saying is true. Have rental prices gone way up in your area? Maybe they think they can get lots more. As a landlord, I’d prefer less monthly income with good tenants. That’s just me though.

He had electronics stolen (phone, laptop) and she walked in while he walked out, full monty, of the shower. I brought a new door knob but I can't find the keys. Seriously they do that shit all the time. The main fear is they put stuff in your food, or temper with it, your toothbrush, your clothes, or your bed, and even they hide drugs and then call the cops on you. This stuff is done all the time.
