Re: How Many Are Close To A Breaking Point?
I'm posting this because I know I am becoming ever closer to reaching my own breaking point. My wife just lost her job today, which means our refinance falls through, which means we won't get $400 a month lower payments, which means we can't afford our current payment.

I'm not making this thread for sympathy, because glp is certainly not the place for that.

I'm making this thread because if it's happening to me and my household, then I guarantee it is happening to many households nationwide, and also I do need to vent a little. More and more people are falling to the ranks of the unemployed every day thanks to Covid combined with Biden policies. The situation is not going to recover anytime soon. Covid restrictions are becoming more strict, and Biden policies are irrational and insane (just like Biden!).

If it's happening nationwide, then not everyone is intelligent/logical enough to peacefully deal with adapting to a new situation and make life changes. If this is the case, then we very well may reach a tipping point or breaking point where people are willing to do anything to provide for their family (especially things that were previously off-limits in a civil society).

If there is one thing that 2020 taught us, it is that liars, cheaters, and thieves win. And if that is the lesson other people who lose their incomes see, then there will be an increase in liars, cheaters, and thieves among the populace and a potential breakdown of civil society.

Disclaimer: I am not advocating violence nor is violence my mode of operandi in a breaking point. I am just making an observation of cause/effect relationships in society.

Trump was president for 4 years but it's not his fault. Biden is president for about 1 week and it's all his fault.

Biden is signing EOs at a record rate. He's the first president to destroy tens of thousands of American jobs in his first day in office, and imbeciles are still talking about Trump (who gave us the best economy in decades until covid hit). These people are actually cheering on an administration that is selling them out to foreign interests and global corporations. (Or they could just be paid shills. It's hard to believe anyone could be this dumb.)

Oh they are. The majority of my colleagues are cheering on the environmental regulations he signs. They will never see it coming though - not even when he starts signing his higher education executive orders.

Heck, if he forgives student debts, that alone could destroy a lot of jobs in higher education.

I know I am, my dad passed away last September, non covid death, and my mom has alzheimers, and he was her primary caregiver. Me and my siblings have been trying to take care of her at home, but she is getting worse, she actually snuck out of the house the other night and walked a few miles down the road in freezing weather. So now we are going to have to put her in a home which means she will be on a death clock with the covid situation. Add to that stress from work, and then having to deal with the usurper in the white house, I'm at wits end.

I bought a van to turn into an apartment on wheels, because I was out of work this year, 8 out of 12 months.

I'm not sure if/when I will lose my job again, but next time I do, I'm not wasting money on rent ever again. I'm moving into my van.

Van life....tons of YouTube videos about it. Check it out.

Re: How Many Are Close To A Breaking Point?
I have to be honest here... I had a sense something pretty much catastrophic would happen eventually...

So I live in a prefab white house. A fairly new one.

Some people would think why would I live like this when I could have opted for an apartment or something...

Well.. The answer is quite simple.

I made sure my home is cheap...

I didn't want to get carried away with 2.4 children etc.

Knowing that difficult times are to come. And some of it has begun. I realised that I needed to get by without needing so much money.

Thankfully, by reducing my outgoings. And living a simple life. Means that the pandemic has affected me marginally.

I help elderly people by cleaning there homes and shopping for them. As they also receive stable pensions. I do other work here and there. And not lay all my eggs in one basket.

Thankfully, by living a fairly eccentric life. It has helped me to remain pretty stable in these difficult times.

I realise that many families are relying on full-time jobs paying a lot out and feeding kids is challenging.

The pressure of losing a full time job. Is like falling off the edge of the cliff.

I thankfully changed my life to suit and adapt to this situation.

I have various small jobs. And live in a prefab little home. I have off grid solar panels and power banks etc... Full home voltage.

Thank God.

We just have to be humble.

Sorry to hear about that. I had a family member go through Alzheimer's, and the disease is far worse for the family than the person. One thing that might help is to create a video from family video clips that act as a 'timeline' for your mom. Just have faces, names, and clips of people growing over. That way she can watch it as many times as possible, and it might actually help. The brain can still learn even with Alzheimer's - the problem is that it is usually dumping information faster than it is receiving it. So putting as much family/personal information as possible into a single video that can be replayed over and over will help slow the progression (watch the movie 50 first dates and look at the video he makes for her at the end).

My mom did the same thing. Left her house, crossed the snowy/icy street after midnight. Then she knocked on a neighbor's door. OMG...so scary. We put her in a nice assisted living faciity, but she died at 91 in 2004 after breaking her hip. She lived a long and good life.

You ARE living above your expenses. Use this as a learning opportunity and get your fiscal house in order. This requires serious sacrifice and I am sorry for you but it’s the only way. I have done it.

DO NOT live on more than one income can provide. This way, one of you could lose their job and you can still survive. Also, you should have built up a savings of 3-6 months of expenses to deal with emergencies. It’s poor planning and greed. LEARN and rebuild. You can do it and I will pray for you and so many others that need to go without so that they can not go through what you are now experiencing.

You said you were very close to closing on the refinance, if they have already done the income verification part you could just play along, sign the paperwork and not say ANYTHING.

Find options that can help you stay in your home, there is something out there I assure you. Since your wife will have extra time on her hands now, she can use it by applying for EVERY program out there if needed.

But I would find out how far into the process the refi is and go with that if possible.

Best thing to do... Get a very good tent. Find some nice land. And somehow encourage your partner. Just go camping. Give up your home. Don't fall into a debt trap.

Spend the money on yourselves instead. People have to focus now. Forget the rat race.

Just get good quality camping equipment. Keep yourself Clean. Encourage yourself when you have dark days of thought...

Try to adapt. The times are different now. Don't blame the Govenment. We must help our selves.

When the law is selectively enforced, there is no true law anymore. Western civilization has aligned itself against good people, and as such, there is no justice anymore. There is only the exercise of power by the corrupt.

My sister and her husband are almost 60. The hospital where her husband has worked for over 30 years in maintenance just laid him off - permanently. They just bought a house. Everything went through. So now they own a house they can't pay for and where is he going to find a job at almost 60 years of age? All that retirement he paid into? Gone. Just freaking gone.

My heart goes out to you and yours.

DO NOT live on more than one income can provide.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78732400

With the refinance, we would have been just fine on my income alone. This was my plan after purchasing the home for just one year to make sure we could afford it.

Also, you should have built up a savings of 3-6 months of expenses to deal with emergencies. It’s poor planning and greed.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78732400

I had 6 months saving from last year. Covid hit. We had to go through some of it. Now this has hit. We have 2-3 months to figure out how to fix this.

I always plan and prepare. I was hoping to get 1 years worth of savings up and running before Covid hit.

My point is sometimes it doesn't matter how much you plan and prepare. Shit can happen to anyone at anytime. The titanic was not unsinkable.

My takeaway to other people is sometimes now matter how much you prepare, you will never be ready for what is coming.

No, OP, it means you are a bad judge of character and have an unrealistic view of your own self.

By definition, GOOD people DO give a shit. Not all of them have the ability to do anything about it, and damn few of them knew you needed help. Also - getting help is not always the best thing. How do you learn to survive if you never have to?

Stop rubbing your self with narcissist lotion and dare yourself to be the person you accuse others of not being.

Else you are a hypocrite and NO BETTER than anyone you look down upon.
The universe is basically an animal. It grazes on the ordinary. It creates infinite idiots just to eat them.
