You are not going to eat it, but you can use silver to help purify water or other liquids. Back when they had milkmen deliver milk to your door in the 1950s, the milk bottles used to have a silver coin in the bottom because it would kill off bacteria.

After the collapse you may find a farm that has some cows that can provide you with high quality milk. How good are you at pasteurization vs how easy is it to put a silver coin in the bottom of your bottle to help your milk keep an extra few days? With a handful of coins you could even purchase the farmers daughter.
