A statement released by the Omsk emergency hospital said that the doctor, Sergei Maximishin, died “suddenly” without mentioning a cause of death.

According to CNN, a spokesperson from the Omsk regional health ministry said that “preliminary data” suggests that Maximishin had died as a result of a heart attack, without providing further details.

While Maximishin did not give any press briefings during Navalny’s hospitalization in Omsk, Navalny's chief of staff told CNN that Maximishin was in charge of treating the opposition leader.

The head of the Omsk region’s health ministry, Aleksandr Murakhovsky—who was serving as chief physician of the hospital during Navalny’s hospitalization—mourned the passing, telling CNN that Maximishin had saved thousands of lives during his 28 years of service at the hospital.
