A hacker gained access to the Oldsmar's water treatment plant, bumping the sodium hydroxide in the water to a "dangerous" level, according to Pinellas County's sheriff.

In a press conference Monday, Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said his deputies, along with the FBI and U.S. Secret Service, are investigating the breach as it is unclear if it came from within the U.S. or from a foreign actor.

The incident first occurred on Feb. 5 at the city's water treatment plant when, around 8 a.m., an operator noticed someone had remotely entered the computer system that he was monitoring. It's a system responsible for controlling the chemicals and other operations of the water treatment plant, Gualtieri said.

At first, the operator did not think much of the action due to the common use of the remote access software by supervisors to troubleshoot from different locations. That's until it happened again.

And this time, Gualtieri says, the hacker did more than just remote in. According to the sheriff, the hacker spent up to five minutes in the system and adjusted the amount of sodium hydroxide in the water from 100 parts per million to 11,100.

A lot of the diverting valves are run by actuators that require an internet connection so you can operate the system with an OIT screen. It’s helpful when you have to divert at a certain gpm, and there is a lot of actuator valve companies that have their own software they sell with the devices so that’s likely where the hacker came in from.

You mean automating critical systems and then letting the dumbest city employees a city can muster monitor those critical systems wasn't a good idea?

They really shouldn't.

I used to work for a company that made police and fire dispatching software, we had a list of phone numbers and notes for remotely connecting, those that cared about security had the phone line unplugged unless we called them to plug it in for some reason.

Of course, we kept the list, w notes on who to call to plug it in and where it was located (call Sgt Smith and have him plug in the modem behind the coffeemaker, etc.) printed out and pinned to the walls of the cubicles all around the programming and support departments in our totally unsecured building.

There is no reason this system should be connected to the Internet.

(It could be connected to a hardwired private network between the plant and the office. Wire or fiber, not wifi.)

I have to wonder if this type of attack (and more) will become common in Republican states. With the amount of home grown terrorists we have here now, who needs to worry about 'foreign' actors. It isn't far fetched to reckon an 'op' like this came from within. More panic more control for the current 'regime' to exploit. A story to follow for sure, top notch link.
