Re: Anyone else like complicated electronic music?
I've been listening to electronic music since 1991. I got into the SF 'rave' scene when it first started and stayed with it until about 2008 but I still listen to nothing but electronic music.

While I have gotten older, my preferred style of music has slowed a bit and while I still really like dark house, SF house, or progressive, I now prefer to listen to psychill/psyambient, melodic house and even melodic techno.

Currently, I am diggin Ben Böhmer. He makes some excellent music.

After a solid 30 years of listening to nothing but electronic, I finally decided to get Ableton and start to try to make some music. :)

Re: Anyone else like complicated electronic music?
My Novation Circuit, my 1010Music BlackBox, and my Polyend Tracker are three of my most favorite toys. I even bring one or all along on any trip away from home that might be longer than a day. I take them even when going camping, especially when going camping.

Does that answer your question?

I've a lot of other musical hardware and software but these 3 are my fav as they are portable and all can fit in a backpack, and all can be operated on batteries (either internal like with the C Circuit, or external via rechargeable USB battery pack). These 3 devices are also reasonably affordable too compared to everything else (I've given away Novation Circuits as gifts to other creative young people). I find my physical location has a significant influential advantage when trying to become cerebrally creative. Portability is crucial for creativity and performance.

Unless you're highly motivated, you're going to become discouraged. Even I myself bought the full Ableton suite, but I find myself rarely using it. Why? Because it sucks sitting at a desk inside the same room every day trying to learn AND become creative. That doesn't work for me, especially being into my 60s now.

Buy yourself a Novation Circuit. Once you learn the thing, and trust me, it's VERY intuitive to use once you familiarize yourself with the loop and layering concept of creating, and learn how every knob and button works. I've bought and given them to young teens that have mastered it. I mastered it in a week after receiving one in 2019. Trust me, you'll love playing with it anywhere you find yourself. And I think it's pretty dang affordable too and why I got one for each of my many grandchildren that desire one. Endless fun!

Right here rockon

I've been stuck on electronic music from various european countries from back in the 80s. It's like a wormhole opened up from that decade into the year 3000 and beyond, especially in Yugoslavia.

That sounds great, nice job...

Most won't be familiar with the work involved in creating something like that.

$330 and a weeks worth of learning and (assuming you have some music background and know all the lingo/terms) you can be creating tunes, beats, riffs, loops, sessions, tracks, scores, whatever too ...

This was the video I saw that convinced me to buy one in 2019 (bought a few more since then as gifts)

I'd say, if you are thinking of getting into electronic or any other kind of music and want the easiest but a very effective way in.

Propellerheads "Reason" software is probably the best route in.

If you play other instruments or want vocal, they can be recorded into it. It looks good and is only as daunting as you want it to be.

Re: Anyone else like complicated electronic music?
As long as it has a meaningful melodic progression that hints of an emotional story then I generally like it. However randomly drifting through seemingly unrelated melodies and disconnected rhythms bores me rather quickly. Anyway just my opinion..... I suppose it depends on an individuals neural connectivity as to what is intriguing or not. Interesting none the less.

Ableton is UGLY and I've seen so many people go off music when they've tried getting into it.

Electronic.

Chemical Brothers
Crystal Method
Prodigy

I remember there were guys like Sasha Dj..
but most of that stuff sounded like similar FLUFF to me.

The Dj's after sounded even more FLUFFIER that I could not even listen to it. I think this is when TECHNO basically DIED.

These PC/laptop & software solutions are great and necessary if you're into actual production and performed of music. But if you're just staring out, a beginner, a novice even, and you just want to stay having fun while learning, this combo will become very discouraging.

My first complaint regarding musical software is that none of it is intuitive. You'll spend more time reaching for the mouse and squinting at pulldown or popup menu items than creating or listening to music. And you better have a comfy chair in front of that PC and monitor you're tethered to too. It takes a lot of time struggling with such an uncomfortable and unintuitive setup to do anything creative or otherwise.

I got greater satisfaction with a groove box in one week than I did in front of Ableton on a PC in a year. I still use Ableton, but only for performance purposes. I use it to sequence/play all my dedicated musical midi hardware. I do all my creating on portable dedicated devices with dedicated buttons, dials, switches. That stuff is intuitive to learn. I can play music a piano. I can't play that on a computer keyboard. I port what I create on these other dedicated devices into Ableton. I use the Circuit to create loops, beats, riffs. I use my Blackbox to digitize and play loops, samples. I use the Tracker to sequence and score music.

If you're just staring out, and want to avoid unrelated issues like a bad USB driver on your PC or feeling uninspiring sitting at a desk in your basement office, then get your feet wet on a real medical instrument or even a dedicated groovebox.

Must admit, Grooveboxes are fun, I've got a Roland MC-505, the sounds are a bit dated, but its definitely fun.

Re: Anyone else like complicated electronic music?
Well....

There are some cool grooves in there, but it seems more like somebody without much real understanding of music just assembled a bunch of samples and some software automatically did the fading and syncing the best it could.

It doesn't feel like much thought went into the specific transitions or composition...more like they just happen randomly.

All the pieces are there.... but could be organized better and directed towards more meaningful arrangement.

Just my reaction after skipping through.

The Moog movie.

Ahhh.....The memories. I remember back in about 1975-76 I was working as an Electronic Technician at Texas Instruments in Dallas, Texas. At the time I was working on Bubble Memories, an interesting non-volatile data storage device, later displaced by battery backed CMOS RAM.

Anyway, during that time they hired an undergraduate intern for the Summer....An attractive and friendly young woman, we had some interesting conversations.....I don't remember her first name , but the one notable thing I do remember was that she was the daughter of Dr. Robert Moog.

Re: Anyone else like complicated electronic music?
I would love sometime to buy a synth or two...Maybe I should begin with an Arturia MicroFreak and then with something more powerful. I have used DAW programs in the past like Renoise and I've made some tracks but I never finished most of them. Anyway I wouldn't publish them, thus it was mostly playing and learning time...
