Subject Can deaf people understand the spoken word?
Poster Handle Tynyyn
Post Content
I've watched a couple of YT vids on folks who have gotten cochlear ear implants. Since they have never heard the spoken word, I'm wondering if they understand what is being said when they have their eyes closed so they cannot pick up visual clues form the person who is talking.

How would a deaf person know what the word "cat" should sound like if they've never heard that sound? Might they not interperate the word "cat" as maybe..."dog"?

I saw a young lady and her husband said "I love you". How did she know he said those words? How come she didn't interperate those words as "I hate your guts"? If she had never heard spoken words, then how does her brain put the correct meaning to the words she has never heard?

Not trying to stir the pot or be a horses rear end, but this is a question I've had in my mind for a while and I've always wanted to know the answer. Thanks for your help.
