[link to katu.com (secure)] You want to hear weird? When we decided to homeschool the 2 oldest during the Gulf War, I talked to my daughter's teacher for quite some time. He had his doctorate at the time. I mentioned that I didn't expect to teach them beyond grade school as I only had a high school diploma myself. He told me that the college students do NOT have to minor in their chosen subjects. They only learn HOW to teach, not WHAT to teach. It's up to the school districts to demand higher levels of education for their teachers. I was truly shocked. I know that isn't true for all teachers. I know many with multiple degrees in their discipline, but when it comes to elementary teachers, they learned how to teach. Many don't have a clue what the content really is. To be fair, elementary school education consists mostly of rote memorization for the students to lay the foundation for more advanced learning. Not as much as you'd think. Things have massively changed over the years. I watched my oldest granddaughter do her math homework. I thought it was just plain old addition. Oh no! There is a whole new world of arithmetic going on with no absolutes. She had been taught to round up and estimate the total and somehow, come up with a total. Made no sense to me. I know I'm not explaining this properly. It was 2 years ago. I looked at my daughter, asked why they just didn't add it. There were fewer steps. She had no good explanation and she has a math degree. Elementary education has never been mainly rote memorization. There was/is some, that's true, but most of what we learned through 2nd grade, kids today learn in Kindergarten now. My whole point was to Jazz's post for sub teachers. The teacher's addition of the text book gives them the information needed to explain the lesson. In a lot of cases, reading comprehension and the ability to explain is all the schools are looking for. The really good teachers keep learning their subjects in order to excite their students to learn. The ones in it for a paycheck just follow the book. I'm glad I had the really good teachers, but my parents had an even better education in public school than I did. |

Glad we, the collective here, have been getting ready for this. I'm not going to move all my two liters of stored water. Don't need that much stored water at the new place due to how the well pump is connected to the big Generac. I'll still store some, but not as much as I have previously. If I add a few solar panels and a windmill to the pole barn, That will extend our ability to produce our own electricity indefinitely. Still have some less-critical shelter stuff to move to the new house, but the really important stuff is out already. Ran some calculations on a simulator. It would take a weapon yield of over 25 megatons airburst over Indianapolis or Cincinnati before we would start to feel the effects at our new location. Since the largest warhead currently in active service anywhere in the world is 5 MT, I'm not worried. Probably would still have some minor fallout issues, but most of that should dissipate to safe levels within a couple of weeks. In other good news, our old house sold before it even hit the market! Odds are really good we won't have a single month with two mortgage payments. Glad we're getting that done before the financial crisis really hits the fan. I am so fucking glad we're out of the city now. Surviving TEOTWAWKI will be much more likely now that we're not in an urban environment. That's all kinds of great news, RR! Did you decide to move all your wood supply? I think you said it was kinda big. I'm taking it half of it with me. I'm leaving some of the older wood for the new owners. The daughter of our neighbor is buying our old house, so we're cutting her some breaks since it's her first house. I've got a lifetime supply of firewood in our back woods that just needs to be cut down. I have been super busy preparing for winter and also spending most of my time on the La Palma thread but just wanted to say congrats on the new place!!!! It is definitely time to bug out to a self sustaining homestead for those that can do it!!!
