Okay I just got back from a briefing on this, I am a figure in the UK's Department of Disease Control (DDC) and have a wide background working with the WHO, UN and others.

It IS a weapon and the design is quite special.
It produces rapid death while hiding behind a usually harmless flu-type infection. This was a weapon that was designed to stealthily infiltrate a population as much as it can before finally unleashing its cargo.
To facilitate further spread, the host's bronchi rupture and the diaphragm stops, making the patient's breaths ragged, harsh and full of blood; meaning that they will spray blood everywhere infecting others if they assist.
It spreads via contact, air and blood and can get into food and water too.
We don't know exactly how it got out but this is what we've been told. However we do not think this was done intentionally.

We don't know that figure yet as for a long time the virus is asymptomatic, then it's flu (which the weakest infected have died of so far), then it's, well, whatever the fuck this really is deep down. Estimates lowest 70% highest 85%; China sharing information with us selectively as usual
