Nurses, doctors sick. Ambulances, blood in short supply. Omicron hits L.A. healthcare hard

The sirens are all I hear every night lately. Saddening and maddening.
 Quoting: Vego

It's like that here, in our little city, too. We're about 5 blocks or so from the nearest firehouse, but we're starting to notice the ambulances coming from other directions. They're coming for other firehouses. They usually don't run the sirens later at night either, just lights.

Personal note: I just completed my OSHA 511 course with a 100% on the final exam.

This authorizes me to be even more annoying when conducting site safety inspections.

" mild case". thing is way schools are handling it. go to school if exposed long as u are vaxed. and no masks, voluntary.

they have no clue.
 Quoting: JAZZz50

They don't. It's pretty obvious, unless this is really what they mean to do. Are they making it up as they go along or is all of this deliberate? I flip back and forth on it. Are they that dumb or that evil? Or both?
 Quoting: Texan Buckeye

Damned if children don't go to school (psychological issues, parents cannot work, economy damaged..etc). Damned if they do go to school (Covid). I do not think there is any grand malicious master plan. It's just humans making it up as they go as there is no playbook for any of this, with the possible exception of the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic. .

"This isn't the first time leaders have struggled with deciding whether to keep schools open in a pandemic.

During the influenza pandemic in 1918, even though the world was a very different place (for one thing only 1.8 billion people as opposed to 7.9 billion now), the discussion was just as heated.

That pandemic killed an estimated 5 million people (the equivalent of 21.9 million dead now) worldwide, including 675,000 Americans, before it was all over.

While the vast majority of cities closed their schools, three opted to keep them open -- New York, Chicago and New Haven, according to historians.

The decisions of health officials in those cities was based largely on the hypothesis of public health officials that students were safer and better off at school". .. [link to abc7.com (secure)]

Yeah Wordsworth, Moderna is the shit alright. Same as all of them apparently at 20 weeks+ against Omicron.

SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern and variants under investigation in England
Technical briefing: Update on hospitalisation and vaccine effectiveness for Omicron VOC-21NOV-01 (B.1.1.529)

Among those who had received 2 doses of AstraZeneca, there was no effect against Omicron from 20 weeks after the second dose. Among those who had received 2 doses of Pfizer or Moderna effectiveness dropped from around 65 to 70% down to around 10% by 20 weeks after the second dose. 2 to 4 weeks after a booster dose vaccine effectiveness ranged from around 65 to 75%, dropping to 55 to 70% at 5 to 9 weeks and 40 to 50% from 10+ weeks after the booster.

So, is there even any point to me getting a Moderna booster?
 Quoting: Riff-Raff

Probably "teaching your grandmother to suck eggs" but I still believe it's a personal decision based on your age, co-morbidities, and work environment. For the record, both of my 30 year old sons and all their friends, many whom work in hospitals, are all boosted (a few breakout covid cases have occurred but, so far, they have all been mild). I have mentioned before that 10 unvaccinated people have died in my LA sons 2000 work environment but 100's are off with long covid (we just don't know whether long covid will occur with omicron or whether vaccines will help.) However, it seems likely that long covid will rear its ugly head and should also be a part of your decision.

Oh yay!!! It's getting better!

I just popped a fever and my nasal passages feel like raw meat. <----- Last time I felt that was when I had H1N1.

Mini LJS and Micro Mini LJS will be tested tomorrow, Mr. LJS on Saturday. If any pop positive, I will assume I am positive.

I do not intend to go for a test unless the symptoms get bad. Would prefer to not take up ER or Urgent Care space unless necessary. Better to stay at home and battle the beast.
 Quoting: LJS

My sister and her husband and two kids had it during the Christmas break. She said it was pretty much like the flu, but that they have seen worse. They are all better now. I hope you guys have a better or at least similar experience. I know you are prepared, which is awesome.

Time for you and the family to hunker down so to speak. Do all the therapeutics gathered and keep checking oxygen levels. Let the fever do it's job but keep an eye on it. You and your family are in my prayers.

Actually every poster and their loved ones get a prayer before I fall asleep every night, animals included. Y'all are family to me.

Totally off topic, but this is the thread I post the most on. I've been getting green from fred 1981. I did an advanced search and didn't turn anything up.

I'm hoping he'll see this and post so I can return his kindness. Not trying to do a call out, honest!

Yeah, this Omicron is some real glitter-type stuff.

People I know, that are more carful than the average Joe are catching this thing. They aren’t the type that pride themselves in decontamination showers or anything like that. But they are aware of it and take steps to try and avoid it.

Bull Shit.

Folks have to be willing to invest more resources into children. More discussion time doesn’t mean all day. It means quality time.

DM, thank you, you are very sweet to offer.

I am very alternative in majority of areas. For example, I have zero qualms about downing food grade EOs, we homeschool since the early 90s, etc. We use all types of supplements, but with ivermectin there is some gut feeling it is not for us. I feel like I should listen to that.

Now if it is ivermectin or hospital, I'll take it all day long. My neighbor takes it every Sunday. I have a super good friend who is the crunchiest person I know, and their fam takes it for ALL things all the time. And, as far as I can tell from my crunchy friend, it is still available locally.

I know how you feel, Moni. I bought some awhile back, but if we don't need to use it, I'm not going to. I will if we have to, but we have to be careful about anything extra we take. Just because it's natural or vitamins or such, doesn't mean it's good for my already stressed out kidneys. I've gotten to be a very protective mama when it comes to those babies! LOL
