Look at an aerial view of a Toyota plant. You'll see their buildings surrounded very closely by their major suppliers. Their "JIT" is actually "hey, if you want to supply us YOU will hold our inventory and deliver it chop chop". Another way to look at it, from a military strategy standpoint is simply "who's got the longest supply line?" Whoever has the longest supply line...loses. If the retail shelf is the "front line" and the supply starts in China? It ends up one of those equations that looks good on paper but translates very poorly in the real world. We discussed the vulnerability of the JIT system, but because it lowered costs, there was no stopping companies from going that direction. Now, those things we pointed out as serious vulnerabilities have appeared. If it just stayed within Japan, the vulnerabilities would be contained, but when it is spread out with a global dependence, we are watching the mess unfold in real time. We just got back from a quick trip to get gas before the weather hits, if ever. Lot's of people there, but not so much at the store and more and more and more people are masking up again. Too bad they're not good masks, for the most part. They've started disinfecting the carts again, too. I think they'd slacked off during the summer. Still catching up while the pizza is cooking, but things seem to have escalated rather quickly. SN, I hear what you DIDN'T say. Y'all are in my prayers for the duration.
