I feel bad for the speech writer. He thought he had something that would make all the evening news shows, some 'deathless prose' out of the mouth of Joseph Robinette Biden, the President's compassion for America writ large, "when these milestones no longer mark our national mourning." But the neurologically damaged Commander-in-Chief couldn't even read the teleprompter. He starts fumbling in the lead up, having to repeat himself, as he often does when he loses his place, acting like he's being emphatic but really has simply gone frtzzz and needs recovery time. Unfortunately the teleprompter operator didn't back up, rushing past the dependent clause, making the sentence a non-sequiter. So he's already screwed the pooch before he gets to the line. But then Joe takes it up another notch by mis-reading 'milestones' as 'millstones.' Recognizing his mistake, he tries again, concentrates hard to pronounce 'milestones' right, but then starts stuttering and becomes a bowl of jelly, completely gone. You can't make fun of a guy that stutters, honestly, but the damage was already done when he lost his place, skipped a line, and then mis-read the word. The stutter was just Tiger Woods rolling down the hill after he'd already left the highway. I'm sure the writer was having an out of body experience watching Joe ruin the sound-bite.
