I will, under protection of law, use lethal force if attacked. |

They are in a safe. Maybe it is time to review them again. Thanks OP fro reminding me. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73697154 My grandfather had all 5 of his kids collecting silver coins in the mid 1960's thru the 1970's. He would pay the kids for the coins. He had hundreds of old Maxwell House metal coffee cans filled with silver dimes, silver half dollars and silver dollars stashed in a below ground room accessible thru the garage floor. Not sure what ended up happening to all of it, grandparents moved to Florida and died back in the 1990's. |

Could I scrape the slag off smelting 90 % and make .999 hand pours ? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76857890 There is no need to melt down silver coins to get down to ‘pure.’ They’re already broken down into easily divisible amounts, universally recognized, and handy for small trades in a desperate scenario such as a currency collapse. There is also the numismatic perspective to be taken into account. “A person is smart, people are stupid.” “Nobody knows until everybody knows” |
Larphillips User ID: 78895011 United States 03/03/2021 12:04 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This is where the “ I could go to the movie, have popcorn and drinks, diner for one and enough left over for a comic book all for a $1” comes from. The money was rare metals so yea around $30 you could go eat a hot dog and soda and watch a movie. Go to the matinee and you’ll have enough left over to do it again today. Quoting: Truth be known An old comparison to be made, that while not exact, gives a good perspective on inflation. A silver quarter could once be used to buy a gallon of gasoline and a $50 gold coin could one be used to buy a fine, tailored men’s suit. The metal values of each can buy these same items today. “A person is smart, people are stupid.” “Nobody knows until everybody knows” |

A lot of uninformed, desperate people are spending pre-1965 coins, also cashing in coin collections at "coinstar" machines, might be tweakers needing a fix, or just broke desperate people... I am finding a good deal of pre-1965 silver in circulation right now, especially nickels. Perhaps the coin shortage last year also caused people to break into their junk silver collections, knowingly or not? Either way check your change! |
