Re: Mental Health Issues Silver Bullet? Are You Arrogant?
I listened to nearly everything Jordan Peterson put online.

Out of the hundreds of hours of lectures, this is the most valuable thing I heard him say.

As a clinical psychologist, Dr. Peterson would listen to and engage a person's problems for weeks and months and years. When he finally got to deepest cause, his clients had one thing in common:

arrogance.

The deepest cause of their problems was arrogance. He said this was true for nearly all his patients.

Arrogance had grown inside them and prevented them from connecting with others and prevented them from connecting with the deepest parts of themselves.

Arrogance had strangled them from growth and meaning.

I still am floored by the implications this. Could it be that we are our own worst enemy and there really is a simple (but not easy) solution to many problems?

Is humility the silver bullet for mental health issues?
 Quoting: All My Hemispheres

good old bar fights and bullies at school were very good tool against arrogance. We have peaty much eliminated those and now will expirience the consequences.

We all after a while think that we are kings of the shit. Back in the days occasionally we were getting punch in the face and reality was quickly kicking in. Now our self arrogance is just exponentially growing and I can see already at very young age like 10y old, they already think they are smarter than teachers, parents etc.

All the social experimentation with being super nice, good, kind, don’t ask question, accept, respect, love everyone, massive Kumbaya will blow in our faces shortly. You can’t be nice all your life, something is going to give.

Re: Mental Health Issues Silver Bullet? Are You Arrogant?
Perhaps simplified, but if you had to put it in one word, yes, he is correct, at least in my opinion. This started with the masses in 1967 with I'm OK, You're OK. It progressed to the next generation and everyone getting trophies for participation. But many of those individuals never learned that there is a disconnect between how they feel about themselves - what they feel they are entitled to - and the real world. So on the one hand you have the arrogance, and on the other you have the scared little person who thinks they can't measure up and somebody is going to find out they are a fraud. In short - there comes the mental illness - the NPDs, the BPDs...

I once said that it's OK for a kid to feel "lower than dirt on a sow's belly" and almost got crucified for it. LOL! Of course, you can't leave them down there, but they have to learn to take responsibility for their own actions and fix what can be fixed, admit they are wrong, apologize. Nobody today wants to own their mistakes, preferring to pass the buck, and that stunts them in the long run.
 Quoting: GA Girl

I think you're right.

Early in my adult life I found relief in telling the truth, owning my mistakes and admitting to them then apologizing. That was all necessary to accommodate holding myself accountable for poor judgement and decisions.

The small company that I retired from had about 50 employees most of which answered directly to the owner.
Most if not all never owned up to mistakes or accidents, they would just shrug their shoulders and say I don't know how that happened or some such.
I with shame, head held low, would at the earliest opportunity would go to the owner and explain how I had messed up. Afterward I would be almost drunk with relief. I think being honest was instrumental in a 30 stint working for a man that was the diametric opposite.

Those clients of his were very successful people paying a high end doctor in private practice.
Or people who sacrificed all meals and coffee out, vacations, new clothes and home decor etc. to pay him for therapy. & He's going to call them arrogant? I don't know about that.
Incidentally, did you hear he became addicted to benzos and the hospital diagnosed him with schizophrenia? No such thing as benzo withdrawal existed. He had to leave the country for real help. Now, a humble person would had just accepted the schizophrenia diagnosis!
 Quoting: LuckyLou

I quit benzodiazepines cold Turkey after 15 years. The withdrawls were protracted for the span of about 3 years. The worst of it was the first 8 months to year. I've kicked heroin, meth, 15 yrs of smoking cigarettes, alcohol, porn, sugar, you name it. You can put all those together and they're still a walk in the park compared to benzos.

I can attest to what Perterson said. I worked in the mental health field for over 6 years and arrogance, self importance, and selfishness were extremely common in most of the patients I worked with. So many of them burnt every bridge they ever had because they couldn’t see past their own noses.

Re: Mental Health Issues Silver Bullet? Are You Arrogant?
There was this Christian psychologist years ago who wrote a book along these lines. Henry Cloud was his name. I was impressed by him coming to the same conclusion but from a
slightly different perspective.

He wrote about how sins that people had committed were at the roots of all mental illness.

He would take his clients through a step-by-step process of soul-searching, acknowledgement and repentance which proved to bring the mental illness to an end. He even said that he had a schizophrenic get cured from his illness.

It kind of lines right up with what Peterson is saying.

That is not how I see it. If Adam and Eve were without sin before they ate from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, how then would they have the sin of pride to compel them to eat of it's fruit?

They did not.

Rather, they were deceived, taken advantage of their imperfection to begin with, that is their ignorance. And once they saw their flawed state they became ashamed.

IMO, Jordan Peterson comes across as arrogant because his knowledge and even his opinions are the products of acute critical thinking. He has mastered the task of critical thinking to a degree that the speed in which he processes thought is near the highest degree possible. That level of thinking allows him to respond in somber and emotionless candor.
