The primary problem I see people making is confusing pleasure and fun with happiness...Happiness often requires delayed gratification which is counterproductive to instant fun and pleasure...Those choices ultimately lead to a catastrophic end...

But I am beginning to believe that happiness (how society defines this) is always transitory and fleeting. True joy (as perhaps what Brief is referring to), comes from God and we find that rest in him and his lessons.
