"America" didn't start in the 1960's.

Settlers came at around 1607

Slaves were brought over 1619

Slavery was abolished 1865

So the settlers came and did their their building for 8 years, then slaves labored 246 years doing the hard labor that history won't care to record, while whites "built america" by creating papers to sign with there quills which history will have recorded/credited.

After finally abolishing slavery whites almost immediately begin their venture into hard labor by working to driving out more natives out their lands so they can carve the faces of their leaders onto a mountain known today as Mt. Rushmore, finally completing this non essential but highly memorable piece of foundation so that you remember these 4 men as the ones "built" America. And finally
on 1941 (just 19 years before your 1960 glory days) after mostly fighting natives for the mountain and 14 years of actual good ol hard it was complete.

By the time slavery ends America already had it's foundations built and the first 8 years compared to the 246 slave years amount to 1/30th of he work. As for politics and government, there wasn't opportunities available for minorities to contribute

Where I went to school in the 60's we were all white minorities among the different white groups in school. Being Russian and Czech, I was a minority, so were most others, the WASP was the dominant group back then.
