"KOPI LUWAK": Coffee Beans That Have Gone Through A Civet's Colon
I SHIT YOU NOT!!

My normally-balanced 44-yr old Nephew is currently bragging about some over-priced whole Indonesian Coffee beans he bought online saying he'd wanted to try them for over year. He's sipping a cup as I write this.

The beans are sold as "Kopi Luwak"; the package label states they are "The Rolls-Royce" of the coffee world [a blatant lie], 100% ethically-sourced and that they were swallowed whole by Asian Palm Civets [which are second-cousins to Skunks] and then passed through their gut and out their ass where they were cleaned, roasted and ready-to-enjoy. The label goes on to proudly state: "Smooth, not bitter with a complex aroma and hints of Caramel and Chocolate." RIGGGGHT!

Perhaps I should also mention that Kopi Luwak beans sell online from $6-39 per OUNCE.

Now, I used to be a Coffee snob. I not only meticulously roasted my own green beans in a much-used Melitta, I also blended same and at one time even did acidity tests.... snobs can become REALLY obsessed!

My beans were always roasted & ground immediately before brewing and my brews were hand-poured through unbleached filters. At one time I had over a dozen varieties of green Coffee beans lining my countertop so I KNOW a good cup of Coffee, having drunk nectar from some of the rarest beans on Earth. Even so, as I've aged my tastes have changed so I switched to Teas.

But even if I was still sipping a nice cuppa' Java, there is NO WAY IN HELL I'd use beans reclaimed from a Skunk's pile of warm, yet somehow tasteful shit.

BTW: Asian Palm Civets are thought to be the original transmitter of SARS to Bats and then humans. So there's that fun little thought to ponder.

So, by all means Coffee drinkers: weigh in and proclaim the joys of drinking a brew made from beans processed through the intestines of an arboreal mammal.

Just understand one thing: I can make a better cup of Coffee using traditional beans that won't have that little something that makes them "extra-special!"

they have coffee beans that you can buy that came from jerry nadler's ass..

they go for a really high price.

there's a two for one too, where both jerry nadler and adam schiff eat the beans and poop them out so it's sort of a centipede gourmet coffee.

but yeah the civet thing blows my mind..who fucking thought of that and gross

people are some fucked up people

Re: "KOPI LUWAK": Coffee Beans That Have Gone Through A Civet's Colon
I have had two friends try it; neither were impressed. Over-hyped. I had the opportunity to try it in Russia many years ago, but not willing to pay $60 for a cup of coffee like the guys driving Maseratis through Arbat.

The quality of the coffee depends on altitude, soil acidity, rainfall and the roasting profile. You can have a great Jamaican Blue that tastes like Starbucks if it isn't roasted properly.

I had a coffee farm and roasting company for more than a decade. I sold my farm to my neighbor, who exports his entire harvest to Japan for big bucks. It sells for $30-$40 per pound in Japan. Thankfully he let me buy 300 pounds for personal use this year. Didn't pay the Japan price, but it was still over $3 a pound green, plus transportation to and from an extremely remote area.

I envy you! I'm very lucky: there's a local retailer who regularly stocks at least two dozen different beans and sells them either green or freshly roasted right there in the store in a towering red/brass contraption that looks like a steampunk prop! He LOVES Coffee a delights in nudging taste buds every chance he gets. And YEAH: Jamaican Blue is a FINE bean!

my brews were hand-poured through unbleached filters

Apparently you never read, and no one ever told you, that pouring coffee through a coffee filter, bleached or not, removes the coffee oil; which is a source of a greater flavor profile that is lost in the filter. Pouring coffee through a stainless steel or gold filter allows most of the oil to end up in your cup. Just sayin.

You're correct but even this old snob had his limits.

BTW: those same oils that contribute to the overall body of the drink can also impart bitterness. It's MORE about the BEANS and less about TECHNIQUE. If you're that obsessive, even the WATER used makes a huge difference [I always preferred distilled so no trace elements would alter the flavor].

Just sayin'.

I couldn't agree more! About a decade ago I bought a 3-gal stainless steel distiller... okay: I CONFESS... I actually wanted to try my hand at making Moonshine! And I still have a bottle of 180-proof Absinthe I made that is now 7 years old.

But, although I never managed to channel my inner Hillbilly I've drank distilled water ever since.

did you know if you feed pigs carrots, and when they shit, the carrots are extra tasty?

like shit covered mashed carrots. no need for a blender. lets eat pig shit with carrots in it.

who thinks of these things.

anyone who thought of eating anything that comes from an animals ass for no reason has some issues.

i mean does the civets colon do some chemical process to it, that makes it different?

and if so, it would be easily mimickable.

Again I agree! WTF is WRONG with people? The claim is that the digestive enzymes in the Civet's stomach break down the acids in the beans and render them more mild. Apparently they never thought that if they simply cultivated less acidic beans they wouldn't be following around little critters with a scoop in hand.

You know, I'll try damned near anything at least once... but there are still some lines I simply won't cross.

BTW: my nephew has finished his first cup of black Kopi Luwak and is now trying a mocha... and he and his equally-stupid FB friends are all smacking their collective lips. As they do.

The wild thing is that while these nitwits were bragging about their exclusive coffees, one fool then mentioned the great deal she just scored on a "big box of pods at a Menard's" - and posted a picture to prove it.

Perhaps "nitwits" is too kind a term...???

THANKS FOR THIS! I just posted this on my nephew's FB page suggesting that it goes GREAT with a fresh cup of Kopi Luwak!

Ya' gotta' love GLP!!

But, I just have to ask: what about Flies that AREN'T so special? You know- those outcasts the others refuse to hang with on the ceiling? Is that cheese wheel a Fly status symbol they can't wait to taste themselves? Or what about the stray Sardinian Gnat or Mosquito that wants to wet their beaks? Once word gets out this thing could easily get out of hand!

Been to indonesia 40 some times. Luwak coffee definitely drinkable and not too bad but honestly can’t really tell much difference. And at local discount pricing of around $125lb it is a ripoff not to mention the majority of it is fake Luwak and just regular beans. Don’t waste your time or $
