Suez Canal BLOCKED by Taiwanese owned container ship. | |
Justme C'est Moi User ID: 80059579 United States 03/24/2021 07:07 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The ship looks seriously overloaded to me. Lots of windage. I believe that these ships can jettison their shipping containers while at sea, which is done to allow the ship to survive severe storms. If so, they should just dump a good part of that load overboard, refloat the ship and clear the canal. Clearing the jettisoned containers should not be difficult with tug boats. Services began with a single cargo vessel named Central Trust, which operated a "go-anywhere" service.[7] A second vessel was added in 1969, and used on Middle East services.[7] -50% read more: [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] I came. Justme C'est Moi User ID: 80059579 United States 03/24/2021 04:40 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There is a maximum amount of rudder steering possible at any given speed. Obviously, they move slowly through canals. Easy to imagine a cross wind hitting that enormous pile of shipping containers and creating a sideways force vector that the steering force can't handle. Also, the rudders are at the back of the ship and the wind force is all along with sides. I had a boat with a lot of freeboard and canvas. Docking in a crosswind was impossible, unless you came in pretty fast to maintain strong rudder control. Then you prayed the reverse gear worked and the engine did not stall. A powerful tug boat at the bow might have a chance to overcome the windage, but even still there is a limit. I would shove about a third of those containers over the side and see if it doesn't float free. By the way, if someone wanted to block the canal, they wouldn't use their own ship. They would blow up someone else's ship in the canal. And they would blow some big holes below the waterline to prevent rapid recovery of the vessel. Justme |

Efforts to refloat the 220,000-ton, 400-metre-long Ever Given resumed on Thursday after a brief overnight suspension, amid fears the operation could potentially take weeks if the vessel needs to be unloaded. The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) said on Thursday it had suspended traffic temporarily while eight tugs worked to free it. Thirteen ships had sailed south along the canal on Wednesday and are waiting in lakes until the Ever Given is released. ... -50% read more here: [link to www.theguardian.com (secure)] I came. I saw. Eight tugboats were working to free the vessel, blocking a lane key to Asia-Europe trade through which about 50 ships a day passed in 2019, according to Egyptian government statistics. GAC, a Dubai-based marine services company, said the Ever Given had been partially refloated and moved alongside the canal bank, citing information from the SCA. “Convoys and traffic are expected to resume as soon as the vessel is towed to another position,” GAC said on its website. -50% [link to www.theguardian.com (secure)] I came.
