Could an Athiest be elected President of the US?
I know a lot of you probably think I am a Jesus freak but for the record and in reality I am closer to a Gnostic if I had to come up with a handle. I havent been in a church other than funerals for a couple of decades. I have never posted anything with regard to supporting Christianity. However, the idea of a President in the Oval office on his knees before God, is far more acceptable to me than an Athiest.

With that said....

The question is this. Every single person who has ever been elected President has professed their belief in Chirst. For many of you, Huckabee is a horrible candidate because he was a Baptist minister. That seems to outshadow him being named one of the top five governors in the country.

I find this funny as the founding fathers would roll over in their graves at the thought of an athiest holding any office.

Just a little over a hundred years ago, the testomony of an athiest wasnt even admissible in a court of law.

Yet Hillary, Bill and all of the candidates say they are Christians, yet you seem to pull Huckabee and Romney out as something different.
'
Do you think if a viable candidate came out of the closet and said..."I am an Athiest" would he/she have a rat's ass chance of ever being elected?

I dont think they would be elected to dog catcher.

Faith is a higher order and is a mandatory requirement for Americans.

Re: Could an Athiest be elected President of the US?
Outside of Romney who is a Mormon which can be construed to be a Christian Sect in that it does have the Bible as one of its Two Holy Books, all those running as either Republican or Democratic presidential candidates are members of one Christian denomination or another. Even Catholic is "Christian".

Remember way back in Bush's memorial service for the victims of 911 there were included a Buddist and a Hindu "ministers" as well as a Rabbi giving prayers?

I seriously doubt and Atheist could be elected as President in this country. People of other faith systems may stand a good chance, but not an atheist.

Most of the Founding Fathers were either Theists or Deists.

People do need to understand English well enough to understand that the word "god" and "God" merely mean some or any object of worship, but not any object of worship in particular.

Legally an Atheist could be elected. The probablities are quite small in that the majority of Americans believe in one god or another.

1. 1801-1809 Thomas Jefferson, 3rd. President of the United States (DR) Confirmed Illuminati & Mason (Masonic Edition, Holy Bible 1951 Edition) "Now here is something that will stun and very likely outrage many who hear this; but there is documentary proof that our own Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton became students of Weishaupt. Jefferson was one of Weishaupt's strongest defenders when he was outlawed by his government and it was Jefferson who infiltrated the Illuminati into the then newly-organized lodges of the "Scottish Rite" in New England. (THE ILLUMINATI AND THE COUNSEL ON FOREIGN RELATIONS by MYRON C. FAGAN)

2. 1809-1817 James Madison, 4th. President of the United States (DR) Confirmed Mason.  (New World Order: The Ancient Plan of Secret Societies, by William T. Still, p.92; 1990) Madison is said to have been a Member of Hiram Lodge No. 59, Westmoreland County, Virginia, a Lodge which had only a short existence, and whose records are lost. (Was married to a Todd, of the Satanic Collins) (The Illuminati Bloodlines, by Fritz Springmeier)

3. 1817-1825 James Monroe, 5th. President of the United states (DR) Confirmed Mason. Initiated: November 9, 1775, St. John's Regimental Lodge in the Continental Army. Monroe was not yet eighteen, but "lawful age" had not yet been universally fixed at twenty-one. Later, Brother Monroe took Membership in Williamsburg Lodge No. 6, Williamsburg, Virginia. (The New Age Magazine, January 1953, pg. 44 (Masonic Publication) Also a member of the Knights Of The Garter. Order of the Garter is the core leader of the Committee Of 300. (Conspirators' Hierarchy: The Story of the Committee of 300 by Dr. John Coleman)

How many more names would you like?

Your right, not an openly admitted atheist. The only thing more unlikely would be to see a Baptist Minister or Morman elected.

The vast majority of people are not going to vote to elect someone who actually believes in drivel like the rapture or armageddon, even if they want to believe in the idea of "the second coming" themselves. Those who might have been leaning that direction in the past have most likely been cured of their naivety by Bush.

My own mother wouldn't vote for Kennedy because of her concerns about the Vatican having to much influence over the executive. My mother was raised in a Catholic school and was a Novice before deciding to become a wife and mother.
Truth is, Huck is doomed... and you know it.
Yes it's safe, it's very safe, it's so safe you wouldn't believe it....

Re: Could an Athiest be elected President of the US?
I admit to the world that I do not buy into the Bible story.

That being said, there are still so many that are afraid to openly admit this due to fear of the thumpers. Therefore, sadly I have to agree that this nation will not yet elect someone that reveals their true thoughts. They must still play this silly game.

Openly admitting their true beliefs may not be what is in the best interest of a candidate. Yet, when it comes down to the people (alone in the voting booth) they can and will make other choices. A person that is so bent on this religion stuff like Huck is losing more votes every time he speaks about it.

I have been a Republican my entire adult life, and they almost lost me. Why? Well besides the whole attacking our freedoms thing, the constant religious yammering has driven me nuts.

I think it hilarious that the MSM came out saying that the Repubs won in the states because of the religion factor.....and you guys bought it! You still have it stuck in your heads that we are all thumpers if we are in a red state or voted as such. I am here to tell you that there are MANY that see things the way I do. Heck even some of my friends are Christian and they will tell you that they would run the other way before voting for a preacher.

As far as Baptist Preachers go,,,,,, my papa was the best there ever was.

I am a Republican and I am an atheist...... SO?

"My earlier views of the unsoundness of the Christian scheme of salvation and the human origin of the scriptures have become clearer and stronger with advancing years, and I see no reason for thinking I shall ever change them."
-Abraham Lincoln

As long as your beliefs stay in a friend's desk drawer until after you're dead its perfectly possible to be an atheist president, and a good one at that.

The vast majority of theists don't understand us at all. If a candidate was to announce his atheism he might as well have announced being a minion of satan; in their heads the two are the same or at least related. We're threats; not only do we disagree with them we challenge their very premise, and explaining why we aren't all evil challenges even deeper premises.

Nope, someone who says they don't believe in God would automatically lose a majority of the Christian/religious vote. Which unfortunatly is alot of people.
