What Happens When You REGROW Vegetables From Kitchen Scraps In The Garden?

I regrew carrots and celery last year for my garden. Worked great because we have a very short growing season.

I tell you, that celery was the last to die. It was a robust looking plant, and yielded so much delicious celery!

By the way, for your experiment try putting a few celery and lettuce directly into water (like in a bowl or glass).

I have tried the dirt route, and the really good ones I grew last year were water-started and when they got about 5 inches tall I planted them.

If you try please let me know which ones turned out better for you!

About eight years ago, I had some potatoes go bad and begin to sprout in my cabinet, so I gave them to my son to bury on the edge of the garden. I didn't want them to stink up the garbage can because we were having a warm week outside. Well, to my surprise, several potatoes plants sprung up from that spot, and produced about 5# of pretty tasty taters. What's funny is that we didn't pick all of the potatoes apparently, so some plant sprouted again the following year. This has been going on each year ever since, and we always get our free 5# of spuds without even trying. I do hill up the dirt around the plants as they grow, but that's pretty much all I do.

I’m keeping them in my kitchen... I think it’s not warm enough...

I am currently growing some 'recycled' green onions in my greenhouse. They are doing well.

I also have a bed with perennial potatoes growing. They don't get very big.

Would like to learn more about growing potatoes.

Very nice lemongrass sprouts there, great idea! Never tried those.

For the celery and romaine, I would change the water every few days. Sometimes I would go a week. I disturbed them as little as possible, and used room temperature water that was not treated with chemicals (we have well water).

It's fun seeing them grow. Now you've got me thinking of starting a bunch in a few days.

Oh, the green onions do great. They are nearly indestructible, practically a weed. And so good! I start those in a little water in my kitchen window after I've cut off the green parts. I don't transplant them until I see a lot of roots and some decent shoots (4-5 inches).

Regarding the potatoes...
We got about 40 pounds out of a pretty small section of the garden. It was nuts!

I have some that I had set aside in a plastic bag with holes and they are sprouting quickly. I also sprout them in a deep bowl on the kitchen counter (does amazingly well) as well as in paper bags in the basement.

Now the it's spring, they are all taking off. When I plant them, for small potatoes ('starts') I just pop the whole thing in the ground in sets of four and mount up over that.

For larger potatoes, I cut them into small 'chunks' with some root on each piece and bury those similarly.

I can't wait to get out there and plant!

We have done that a bit with the lettuce. Ever since they stopped taking the trash here, and want us to recycle food scraps for their giant compost operation, I don’t feel bad about wasting any food scraps. It’s a lot easier than having to compost it all ourselves. It sucks for people with babies and disposable diapers who only get their trash taken every 2 weeks though

Oh you must tell us how you did the celery! I have a cut end with one little root. It’s in water atm. I really don’t know what to do with it.

Things you can easily regrow or 'start' in your kitchen and then transplant:

celery
romaine lettuce ( or any head of lettuce that has the base on it)
potato starts
green onions
garlic starts
onion starts
bok choy
fennel
leeks
lemongrass
carrots
beets
rosemary, oregano, basil, cilantro, parsley (from a fresh sprig)
pineapple
Sweet potato

Fossy, you can keep it in a sunny window and see how it does. But next time you get celery, cut the tops off leaving about 3-4 inches of that bottom bulb. It's better if it has all those stalks.

The shoots will come out of that mass more successfully. It's more difficult to do one stalk like that, but with patience I'm sure it would grow!

You just have to add a few inches of water, but it will do best if it's getting lots of sunlight and staying at a nice room temperature.

Most anything of the genus Allium is indestructable south of actual tundra zones. That's onion, garlic, and most anything else that grows from a bulb and stinks. Chives make quite attractive ornamental plants that you can eat. They produce numerous blue flower heads. They also propagate very well from seeds.
