What does it mean when I hear a dull "clunk" every time I lift my foot off the gas pedal to shift?

Automatic or standard?

C0uld be a worn out mount transmission mount or engine mounts, they are made with rubber inserts. Or loose torque converter bolts if auto trans

check your transmission fluid?

Manual shift. I suspect it's the rubber in the engine/transmission mounts. On a cursory inspection they don't look that bad (they're not torn or shredded), but they are 17 years old and have probably lost all their "softness".

U joint or CV joint......

I thought about that, but I get no weird noises when turning.

Check the boots for any tears, also the u joint should cause a dull clunk as torque is removed.

Ok. Thanks. The last time I changed oil, I did have a look at the boots and they weren't leaking anything. I'll have a more thorough check.

When I am having issues sometimes I mount a gopro in key spots with a magnetic light do a test drive recreate the issue and review footage.

The ujoint could cause a clunk as torque is removed not should... sry

Does your shifter move when you hear the clunk?

I don't think so. I've got my hand on the stick when preparing to shift but I don't feel anything. The clunk seems to happen most often in the 2nd gear. Sometimes it happens in the 1st gear, but never in the higher gears.

-Hand on the stick.
-Lift my foot off the gas.
-"Clunk!"
-Press the clutch.
-Shift.
-Release the clutch.

That's what I was thinking, too, when I read the Thread headline. Something along the drivetrain must be lose.

Sounds like you have a worn dogbone mount bush, otherwise known as a Pendulum Mount, it is found underneath the car between the two front wheels.
