Some of it is, anyway!!!

My russets have gone insane with growth. My little red potatoes and yukon golds haven't done anything yet, and I planted them all at the same time. I guess they just take longer. Also, I now have to figure out how to fend off squirrels because two of my seed potatoes have been dug up! For some reason, they only took them out of the middle container and left the ones on the end alone. Maybe because they had already sprouted leaves?

5 stars for the GLP farmers!

My garden is just about ready, been turning the soil with my pitchfork and getting the weeds out. I love my pitchfork, every farmer should have one. So much potential, looking at all that freshly turned earth, like a blank slate.

Mother's day is our frost cut off so I'm waiting until then to plant. In the meantime I walk around looking at the flower beds, so happy to see green shoots coming up from the bulbs I put in last year. Picked up 10 bags of mulch yesterday, next week I'll get a few flats of marigolds for the front bed. Marigolds are my favorite annual. Otherwise I stick to perennials because I'm old and frugal- buy them once and plant them once.

I love talking to my plants too. Glad to hear I'm not the only weirdo who does that

I'm on year five of both first vegetable garden and first chicken coop. Until my 30s I had always lived in cities. Don't think I will go back, I like the country life.

There's a learning curve but it's SO rewarding. A way to commune with nature and get in touch with the environment with the zen of gardening

Highly recommend!!!

do you guys realize that many of the foods we grow and eat actually REQUIRE us for them to live?

they need us to plant them and help them grow to make more seeds/fruits/veggies.

you wont find them out in the wild.
its a symbiotic relationship in which we need each other to survive.

for whatever reason i have NEVER had any luck growing roses.
they get the black spot, never bloom and grow lanky as hell in full freaking sun.
i ripped mine out after five years of nothing happening and dammit, the thing grew back!
i ripped it out too (not playing THAT game anymore) and have pineapples there now.
they are very happy.

Since I've started this little backyard caper, every trip to Lowe's has become an adventure. I have great difficulty leaving without a couple of new plants. What have I gotten myself into? I went from 0 to crazy plant lady in just a couple of months.

Re: Who is gardening? It is very therapeutic!
Let's take a deep breath and relax by the plants, you guys. Seriously - this world has gone to absolute shit and I went and sat outside barefoot in my little (beginner's) garden, and I literally FELT my blood pressure go down...I felt my body relax.

So this is my first actual garden. I've grown things here and there, but this is the first time I actually sat down and planned out an actual garden. I saw my first potato sprouts yesterday and squealed with delight. I grew that!

There are few things as exciting as watching veggies grow that you put there yourself.

Oh. my. goodness....why didn't I start doing this earlier???
 Quoting: Only Me

Congrats on the potato sprouts and the planning of your garden! I love gardening but I live in an apartment so I can't do as much as I'd like to. Two years ago, I did grow a few cucumber plants in a container on my bedroom window sill that grew to cover the entire 5ft X 6ft window where I couldn't see outside. I work from home and could literally sit at my desk and pull off a cuke if I got hungry. lol

I'm thinking of doing hydroponics in my closet for the basic garden stuff...looks interesting.....

Re: Who is gardening? It is very therapeutic!
My lavender is wilting for some reason. I gave it some fish fertilizer today and I'm hoping that will help it.

I haven't over-watered it, and it was pretty in the pot when I bought it, but it was trying to climb right out of it's pot, so I had to put it in a bigger one. That's when it went south.

Anyone have any advice? Is it just stressed because I moved it? I thought it was a hardy plant. Why is it being so temperamental?

Chicken fertilizer is too hot for veggies. Cow manure is the best. i go to the farm and pay the farmer per bushel. Farmers are not too crazy about selling their cow manure. They'd rather spread it on their own land. So, cow manure is at a premium here in the city.

even if you live in a large town or city.. you can enjoy gardening. Even a small one can be very productive. Very relaxing as well. Also, creating a backyard get-away (using small bushes, flowers, well placed small trees) has similar stress relieving characteristics. Improves your property. Very peaceful.

Therapeutic Yes! But most challenging. I live in the mid desert against 17000 acres of wild land. Annuals can't survive the extreme temperatures and what does survive gets eaten by....well you name it, we got it.
Anyone with experience with this, I would love your advice. I'm fortified to the hilt and pack rats, rabbits, skunks, raccoons, havelina and coyotes find their way to my food forest in the desert. Been trying for 3 years now. Please let me know how you keep very hungry and thirsty critters away.

You may need to put up a tall fence around it all. We do that here in the Carolinas to keep out the deer.

Got vegetable garden going.

Put in a raised bed this year too.

Planted 14 blueberry bushes, 2 large blackberry bushes and some raspberries.

Planting 8 more grapes.

My figs look good too.

Putting in some more herbs too.

Thinking about buying a field next door and starting a mini orchard.
