It is thrilling to grow things, especially if you can eat them.
I have a shady lot, so I can only grow certain flowers and such, but its fun and looks beautiful.
It is great therapy.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 71375307

I have a really good sunny spot, but I did use a lot of containers just in case I need to move things around. Since I'm new to it, I wanted to have as much mobility as possible.

I'm so excited
 Quoting: Only Me

Good idea with the containers, you sound like a natural.
My first several years were awkward, I loved it but I didnt know anything about it. It looked like a toddler just went in there and stuck things wherever.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 71375307

That would be me - I'm that toddler.
 Quoting: Only Me

Getting out in the dirt like that can bring out the toddler. Id be out there for hours, running to and fro in a happy delirium, took me years to get calm enough to plan and make it look not crazed.

My mom's chickens never smelled bad. They were fed better than most humans, though. They got scraps from their meals that came mostly out of the garden. She swore that if you feed your chickens only good, nutrient-dense food, they won't smell bad. Neither will their poo.

That could just be her though.

Just planted potatoes. First time. They say it's easy. Just sit back and watch 'em grow.

Last year I planted about 120 cloves of garlic. I got a good crop. i just love garlic.

Chicken fertilizer is too hot for veggies. Cow manure is the best. i go to the farm and pay the farmer per bushel. Farmers are not too crazy about selling their cow manure. They'd rather spread it on their own land. So, cow manure is at a premium here in the city.

Once fall hits, this thread will turn into food storage and preservation...another thing I'm new to.

Welp...better late than never! I'm fortunate that I grew up around gardeners, so I don't feel totally lost. I keep remembering little tidbits of wisdom from my Nannie. This will go well, I think.

Even if it doesn't, there is nothing wrong with trying.

Let's take a deep breath and relax by the plants, you guys. Seriously - this world has gone to absolute shit and I went and sat outside barefoot in my little (beginner's) garden, and I literally FELT my blood pressure go down...I felt my body relax.

So this is my first actual garden. I've grown things here and there, but this is the first time I actually sat down and planned out an actual garden. I saw my first potato sprouts yesterday and squealed with delight. I grew that!

There are few things as exciting as watching veggies grow that you put there yourself.

Oh. my. goodness....why didn't I start doing this earlier???

Bit too early for me to plant tomatoes, peppers etc., but I put in peas, potatoes, spinach, kale and lettuce a few weeks ago, and their going nuts. If I can just keep the squirrels from digging everything up....

A bunch of the kale and collards I planted last fall survived the winter, so I'll be harvesting that this week. Fall garlic and onions will be ready here in a month or so.

Been weeding my seedum patch that partially lays in the street. Lots of wild strawberries and clover took over. Seedum is so fun, grows easy, easy to take out if you change your mind and don't want it. It's covering most of the front of my garden, blending with other seedum varities. I call it street scaping.

That, my cats and good food are the only reason to live anymore. I barely get through the day.

Gardening is the best hobby anyone could take up, especially now. Not only a vegetable garden.. but just create a garden of small trees, bushes, flowers in your yard. Turn your yard from bland grass to a small slice of paradise in a couple of years. Excellent way to spend time. Relaxing to your core and greatly enhances your property.

Vegetable gardens are very beneficial on many levels as well of course.

Sounds like we have some seasoned gardeners around. Not surprising on GLP!

I really think that this is THE time to start learning these things if we haven't already. We are just about careening toward doom, so we need to at least be able to eat well, dammit.

F-you, world! I'll be in my garden.

Agreed - I have an English garden with tons of perennials and fruit trees, a pond and pergola covered in grape vines. Spent half my life working on it.

I only do vegetable gardens every few years, Have to be in the mood, cause I am like screw it, it so much easier to buy them from the stands and farmers market, also I grew up on a farm, so yeah Livestock and gardens lost their appeal long ago.

My best friend's wife wanted that rural experience and she bought miniature goats. Great, but I had to deliver a breach birth two summers ago, cause the vet got nervous after a 6 hr. labor and he could not get it out. I was up to my elbow and turned the first one, and the Nany was screaming. but It was too late, the kid had been suffocated inside the womb with the pushing from the long labor. None of the 4 kids made it, but the mom at least lived. It was a freaking horrifying day and I have seen a lot, but that was the worst. And That is why I like my simple English Garden. LOL

I think we're okay. It doesn't get very cold in the mornings, but in Oklahoma, you can never tell. We could get a freak snowstorm in the middle of April and it wouldn't be just real surprising to me. That's why I'm waiting until next week.

The tomatoes are the scariest for me because there is so much to it - all those crazy hornworms and blight and trying to keep it from hitting the dirt and and and....eeep

But watch me learn how to do it. Just freaking watch me!

:omtony:
I can do it
 Quoting: Only Me

I'm 7b also and I have my tomato and ranunculus seedlings outside now under a row cover hardening off. I love gardening also. I tried tomatilla tomatoes and cucamelons last year. Did so well im doubling them up this year.

This year I am trying asparagus beans a vine type and and tons of different flowers I winter sowed in jugs outside. I have chamomile, zinnias, morning glory, pansy, snapdragon and butterfly weed all looking really good for planting soon.

Its my happy place. I like to bust it all apart, dig it up, than put it back together. Later enjoy a nice evening stroll thru my hard work.
