Moved here from a democratic run city and it was awful. Now when I hear guns it doesn't bother me at all, in the city it was duck and cover, lol. A mountain lion and the Screaming Hawk of Doom. Holy fuck that is terrifying, in a gates of hell kind of way. Yeah. Not something you want to see at your door in the morning. Best just to stay home for the day after a harbinger like that. LoneStarRising |

LOL, the only "rural" areas that are remotely decent to live in are ones which are within driving distance of cities where the population generally ends up working. I've driven through half the US counties. Much of rural America is a dump where the only grocery store is a Dollar General in a dilapidated downtown where much of the commercial real estate has either been abandoned or consists of nothing but antique shops and bars and it's pure guess work if one of the endless abandoned homes is a meth house or simply a farm let go fallow. US Census checks out on this too, since those places constantly see an outflow of people as there aren't any jobs and no future hope of them. |

I've seen plenty of rural America unlike most people in this thread. Everyone talks big about Rural America, but no one in their right mind wants to live there. They want to live in a version of it's that's close enough to civilization that they can go to a mall and Red Robin on the weekend. No one actually wants to live in Shelby County, Missouri or Lauderdale County, Mississippi. The best "real rural" they mean is they want to live out in the mountains of Colorado or Montana where it's actually aesthetically attractive and not West Kansas. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 56163828 where the hell did you bear witness to this ? decaying homes, trailer parks ,the dollar stores ? Off the freeways where you didn't go. If you took I-80/90 across the country, I know you wound up complaining to whoever else was in the car that Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, et al were all boring. Had you gotten off the freeway and visited something like Minden IA, Gothenburg NE, Sturgis MI, whatever, you'd have seen these places. They're everywhere. They're why a new Dollar General opens up every 6 hours in this country on average. The thing is no one goes to these places. Why would you be in Purcell, OK? There's no reason, so you don't know. Unless you specifically make it a point to go drive into something like Cairo, IL because you know it's a fetid dump full of abandoned homes, you'd not see it. |

This is exactly true for where I live in a rural southern community. Meth and drugs is a problem all over. I'm lucky in that I've made my money and can afford to live somewhere that has no industry. They built a Dollar General about half a mile up the road from us. I say this guy nailed it. |

Grandma doesn't get knocked to the pavement and have her purse snatched because there's no one around to do anything to her. Everyone under 50 left to go somewhere that had jobs, and she stuck around because her home is worth literally nothing on the open market and her husband paid for it before passing away in his late 60s of a heart attack.
