So Let's talk about SHTF
So I've been having the same feeling as many on this board - that something is likely to go very wrong in the not very far future. Feel like I'm being pulled towards that wilderness survival schtick and getting my own farm. Well as you can imagine - this is very expensive to bug out. I haven't found anything liveable for my family of 5 for less than around $150k and then I'm on my own on my farm - frankly I'm not the best guy to protect the family from murderous marauders who want what I have. I think even if a couple more folks join me, I'll be better off, but who knows. And I would need to quit my high paying job to move out to the boondocks and farm - and eventually I'll run out of money.

So I found this operation......

IIn summary - for around $50k I can secure a luxury spot for 5 years for my family. Safety in numbers. Food. Weapons. Ammo. Professional asskickers on staff. What more could I ask for?
And I can vacation there a couple of times per year so the kids can learn to ride horses and shit.

r
So GLPers - I come to you to convince me that this is either a great or horrible idea and why.

Thank you in advance you marvelous crazy family.

The worst Idea is to try to rely on some one else during SHTF. If you can't survive by yourself or with your family, you probably won't survive.
That said, what guarantee do you have that they will let you into their community during SHTF.
You sound like a useless eater. No SHTF skills. So why would a community like that want to keep you around?
Once you run out of food, they will not want to care for you and your family and if you have no SHTF skills to trade, you will be kicked out.

If they don't let you in or kick you out later on:. Who is going to stop them? No courts, No law, So Who?.

They can take your money now and block you out later on. once SHTF starts, ( overselling available spots is common in a lot of businesses).

Then there is the distance factor, what makes you think you will be able to get there, after you finally decide to bug out?

You sound totally unprepared and not willing to put the time and effort in that will be require to ensure survival, with or without their help.

Re: So Let's talk about SHTF
I have a business idea which I may put into action at some point.

I would simply put some well-constructed storage units in a remote site where people can cache their survival gear and supplies. It would have to offer extra security, but would charge more than the normal storage units.

Having a source for clean water, underground shelter, etc. would be a plus.

The average apartment dweller or person in the suburbs could rent anything from a small locker to a storage room sufficient for a motorhome.

As more people get evicted during the coming economic depression, storage units could be a good business plan.

OP, it takes time for a city dweller to toughen up after moving to the country. You don't want to be going through that learning curve during a time of extreme stress and uncertainty. Move now, get some land and a few goats or cows. Find a job, any job, that allows you to work from home. i.e customer service line.

I agree with the above poster that they will probably kick you out after taking your money.

I would rather get together with some like minded friends and buy a piece of land.....going with a organized company won't guarantee decent people.....its like renting in an apartment building, you have no say about your neighbors......

Re: So Let's talk about SHTF
I should add:

I remember the massive evacuation of Houston and the Gulf Coast when Hurricane Rita threatened.

There was a huge traffic jam of cars inching along until most ran out of gas before traveling 100 miles. I made it to San Antonio and a relative's home because I stopped for hours to let the other cars in front of me run out of gas first.

By driving slowly in top gear, I got over 50 MPG out of my Honda Civic and finally made it to a gas station while running on fumes.

The vast horde was totally unprepared! Most did not have a bottle of water, a sandwich, or diapers for babies. It was a zoo with people defecating alongside the road in the dark. The fast food restaurants and gas stations sold everything and closed.

The people had never experienced a time when they could not buy gas, visit a convenience store, or get a burger from Mickey D's.

In such a scenario, I would suggest dirt bikes with a small trailer to carry extra gas and supplies so you could bypass the traffic jams.

I’m a useless feeder? I’m responsible for the distribution of over 100 million lbs of dairy products every year. I WORKEd thru covid hell, to feed your useless ass. When my type quit, its the definition of shtf.

Try it out for a year, if SHTF you'll have a fall back position, if not, you'll have peace of mind for a year.
