Getting closer to the consistency I'm aiming for. I'm only adding about a quarter of the wood chips Back to Eden calls for because we don't get as much rain as up in Washington state. I'll let that cure till about mid-January, turn it, and see how we're doing.

A quick how-to video on making DIY ollas. These are simple to make. 8" or 12" terracotta pots work fine. Just a regular silicone tube will seal them fine.

I'll have a cup of hot Ephedra tea this afternoon. Just take handful of Ephedra twigs (an ounce is a good metric for a dose, let's say 2 heaping tablespoons) or chopped up in a tea ball and let that steep for at least 20 minutes to make a strong medicinal effusion.

Have a few cups of that, and your cold and sinus congestion will start clearing up. Instant liquid Sudafed from an ugly twig.

In some studies, Ephedra has been shown to be effective against Covid-19.

That shouldn't really surprise anyone as it's been employed for centuries as a cold and flu remedy.

As shelves empty of Sudafed and Benadryl, ordering some Ephedra itself might be a good idea just to have in stock.

Big pharma isn't going to tell you these things. You'll have to do your own research.

All I can tell you is that having a cup of Ephedra, Coltsfoot, and Horehound tea from time to time during the winter seasons from 2019 till now has kept me symptom free. I also have Cinchona on hand, but as yet have not needed it.

[link to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov (secure)]
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) had demonstrated effectiveness in the prevention and control of COVID-19. Statistics showed that Ephedra and Glycyrrhiza were frequently used in the treatment of COVID-19. We hypothesized that the Ephedra-Glycyrrhiza drug pair is a potential choice for the treatment of COVID-19. Here, 112 active compounds were identified from Ephedra-Glycyrrhiza via network pharmacology approach. Ephedra-Glycyrrhiza pair enrichment analysis demonstrated that these compounds might participate in the cAMP, PI3K-Akt, JAK-STAT and chemokine signaling pathways, which had a high correlation with respiratory, nervous, blood circulation and digestive system-related diseases....

Re: Gardening Journal - Post your gardening updates here
I personally have had medicinally satisfactory results from an infusion of chopped Ephedra twigs in a large tea ball. However, I wanted to get a bit more specific with that dose. After measuring what I actually have found effective as a medicinal dose for myself (6ft tall male), it comes right out to 1 ounce of the raw, dried material to 6 ounces of water. I have comparable results in that dose to taking Benadryl, or Sudafed and I'm clear for several hours.

A gonorrhea/syphilis medicinal dose of the tincture, or fluid extract of Ephedra in the American Dispensatory (1918) is 1 to 2 apothecary fluiddrachms. That's going to give us a safe metric to work from. That comes to about 3/4 tsp to 1.5 tsp if you're using a medicine spoon to mix it with 6 oz of water.

Scudder has stated in his formulary that any of the tinctures may be made in a 1:1 ratio (8 oz alcohol to 8 oz plant matter). The formularies suggest using 3 parts alchohol to 1 part water in this particular case. Take 95% Everclear and cut it by a quarter with water and you'll be close enough.

It should be noted that all of the tannins in Ephedra were not isolated until 1920.

If you're in Texas and run across some Ephedra trifurca, use it just like you would regular Mormon tea (E. nevadensis) as it is just a sub-species of the same.

The SFG Planner is basically an online version of what everyone used to do in their paper gardening journal. It's nice, though, because it puts your planting and harvesting dates in your database.

My basic plan is to plant around central 3 gallon ollas that I made from terracotta pots. This is going to cut my irrigation needs down to nearly 0%. I'll be saving 75% from even the drip irrigation system I installed last season.

The vast majority of what I'm doing is for medicinal tinctures, but I still have plenty of room left over for my corn and pumpkins in the summer.

Medicinal prickly lettuce, wild carrot, wild onion, wild garlic beginning in the cool season can all be made into tinctures as well. I'm also going to be trying a dwarf Baptisia this year that I think will grow better in a southwest arid environment.

Mandrake, Clematis, Datura, Baptisia, Delphinium (Desert Larkspur), Asclepius (Narrowleaf Milkweed), Sagewart, Ephedra, Lavender are some of the major medicinal staple herbs that can go around the perimeter.

I have a lot more I'm planting in between these, but these are the major focus. Navajo Tea will also be planted. I want to have a basic stock of pretty much anything I need in the medicinal tincture and effusion cabinet in this plan.

It is mid-January. So, it's getting around that time to start planning for next season. People are getting their plants started indoors, or in the greenhouse for the rest of the month.

What is 2022 going to look like? What are your personal and family needs for this year? What seeds do you need to get on order now? Where do you want to be at the end of this year? Those are the questions we ask as we enter planning and dream phase.

The Arugula will be going on the back square where the 3 sisters (Corn, Beans, Pumpkins) will be in the summer. I'll get this Arugula in on February 25 as the very first outdoor planting and ready to harvest May 6.

Why might we want to start with a cover of Arugula, or London Rocket greens? Because these are very early sprouters that will tell you when your spring rains have come. Plant them and then leave them alone and don't water them. When you get your first spring rains, that Arugula will pop up. That's going to be a good indication that it is safe to set your ollas in your plots and fill them with water, or start your irrigation cycle. Just plant it and then leave it alone until the spring rain makes it sprout. That's a good indication of what your season is doing and will ensure that you don't plant too early.

Right before that Arugila starts to bolt, it's time to harvest it and cycle in your late spring monsoon crop (out here, anyway). That Arugula should be ready in zone 8a in late April, or that first week in May. Arugula is able to sprout in temperatures as low as 40F (4C), so it's a great cool season indicator.

Just got a notice early this morning from Strictly Medicinal that their Mandrake live plants are now back in stock.

I ordered two officinarum and two autumnalis.

Folks, these go fast. They don't ship till mid-March, but I guarantee they will be gone by mid-February.

If you want mandrake live plants, this is your one and only window in the year to get them.

One tincture that has been on the hush-hush list for centuries is Chaste Tree tincture. It's for people who are willing to face the facts of life and its situations and may need to reduce sexual desire. I don't know what your situation may be and I don't really need to know. For whatever reason, sometimes you might need an anaphrodisiac.

But, does it do what they claim? It does, indeed. It will keep those hormones as calm as a lamb. It doesn't destroy the sexual faculty, it simply gets the chemicals in a state where you are in control and not the chemicals. That's the great thing about Vitex tincture. I make mine according to Dr Scudder's instructions. Dr Fyfe's Specific Diagnosis and Specific Medicine doses it to 20 drops to 4 oz of water and take 1 to 2 teaspoons every two to three hours. That's actually a sensible dose (Vitex tincture is very potent and will cause diarrhea if you take too much) and I've suffered no side effects. It does what it says on the tin and it also happens to be the only anaphrodisiac that I've ever found to be truly effective. Monks didn't use it for nothing. It does what they claim.

Just like in everything else in life, not all pharmakeia is bad. It's all how you use it. Sometimes the magic potion is just what the Dr ordered.

I did an 8 oz seed to 8 oz 195 Everclear as per Dr Scudder's instructions. I let that go a full month before use to get a strong, medicinal quality tincture.

What Vitex is effective at is getting to sleep a full night and not have the cock crow thrice before dawn. It's like bottled Peace.

Why take Vitex as a male? Even my old batty herb lady gave me a strange look when I ordered more Vitex seed. You want Vitex? quoth she. Yes, I want Vitex. Put it on order.

Many reasons, but mostly as an evasive maneuver in a society where sex has been weaponized as a destructive force instead of a creative, life affirming force. They've turned the dance widdershins instead of deosil. Therefore, you'll excuse if I need to take some precautionary measures in defense against the dark arts, because dark arts are indeed in play. I'm not a well to be tapped for others' profit. I'll stay the captain of this vessel, thank you.

Regarding Mandragora root tincture, it is most important not to use pure grain spirits. 1 part grain spirits to 5 parts water will be our Mandragora tincture solution. It also helps to powder it as much as possible. Let this macerate 4 weeks, or a full moon cycle.

Remember that the active medicinal ingredient in Atropa Mandragora (as in Atropa Belladonna) is Atropine. Mandragora has nearly the same levels of Atropine as Belladonna. In small doses of the tincture, it is a remedy for capillary congestion and low blood pressure. Mandrake is a spinal, cardiac and respiratory stimulant. And if you use it wrong, it is an irritant narcotic poison that can and has caused death.

In its circulatory virtue, it does increase the blood pressure and circulation, which is no doubt why it was thought to be a warming aphrodisiac that aided in fertility (it makes women hot).

The dose should not exceed 5 to 10 drops to 4 ounces of water and dosed at no more than one teaspoon per hour to remedy low blood pressure or respiratory issues. That works out to 1/4 to 1/2 drop dosage. And that's all you're going to want to take.

Indications (from Dr Fyfe) - Dusky redness of the surface from capillary congestion; patient dull and inclined to sleep; eyes dull and pupils dilated; deep ache of the loins and back, with a sense of fullness; dully, heavy headache; sleep with eyes partially closed, night sweats of consumtives; diseases of the brain when there is a sense of fullness, dizziness, drowsiness and dull, heavy aching, incontinence of urine.

Atropine, to this day, also happens to be the antidote to heroin and morphine overdose as the two are antagonistic to one another.

It's getting into the late winter rainy season in Israel, but it's also the time the Mandrakes are blooming.

Song of Songs gives the reader a few hints at what time of year is being celebrated in each movement. The Mandrake is the winter flower of Israel and was the symbol for the trybe of Reuben. It is in blossom from December through early February.

Song of Songs 7

13The mandrakes are wafting their essence,
And at our gates are all fruits pleasant,
Every kind, both the novel and the ancient,
Which I have treasured up for you, my beloved.

It grows down in the Shephelah hills. Mandrakes do not like a lot of rain. That area only gets about 18 to 20 inches per year. Mandrakes also like semi-rocky soil, so put a limestone by your Mandrake when planting. It will appreciate it. We get about 14 inches of rain per year out here, so a Mandrake might require a little watering with an olla, but really not much. They pretty much grow like a Datura preferring dryer to more moist conditions.

Matthew 13

Jesus saith unto them, Have ye understood all these things? They say unto him, Yea, Lord. 52Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is initiated into the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an estate lord, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things both novel and ancient.

Getting a few cool season herbs in the ground early. Wanting to catch that late February / early March rain that will get the arugula and carrots going before I start a watering cycle with the ollas.

All of these will be made into medicinal tinctures.

The ollas are almost set. I wanted something a little more substantial at the base, so at the hardware store I picked up stainless steel drain stoppers bolted on with a wingnut and then sealed that with silicone. That's going to make sure it doesn't break and keeps a watertight seal. If you're going to do olla irrigation, I suggest getting something substantial like that to plug the bottom hole. Silicone alone made not hold for long when buried.

Each of these ollas built with 10" terracotta pots will hold 3 gal.

Today was the Zayan Ha-Adar. It is the traditional date of Moses' birth & death. It is the traditional planting time and so I wanted to at least get a few things in the ground. Of course, that time works in Israel as it's subtropical. However, it's not a bad time even here in zone 8A.

Ollas installed.

Ok, that came out better than I thought.

I'm going to get good coverage with that.

Have already tested out two and they do seem to be putting enough water out there to keep soil moist. One of these 10" ollas should last you about 6 days between fill ups. And you may not want to water all the time. Like maybe 6 days on, 3 days off depending on the cycle.

Getting the north side squares mixed up in a cactus mix of 1/2 sand to 1/2 soil to 1 shovel of pea size gravel. Let's say 3 shovels of sand to 3 shovels of soil to 1 shovel of gravel. That's going to give you a nice, semi-rocky well draining mix for more arid plants like your Mandrakes. Mandrakes will be going on the north side over there and toward the north is how they usually like to grow anyway.

And what's the worst that can happen? If it ends up being a total bust, I can always install my drip lines again. However, I really feel good about ollas this year. This is an easy, no-brainer, and very water efficient method.

I'll be hand mulching the pile in as the herbs start growing this spring. I'm going to be working that pile a bit to get it ready. But, I'm feeling really good about this xeric setup this year.

And if your garden nursery is out of pea gravel, alley gravel works great. Yep, just plain alleyway gravel.

Beeches, there should still be some in stock, but you might want to hurry if you're going to snag a few. They go quick.

They'll do well in a regular cactus mix. You can do growing pots, but make sure they're really big, like 3 ft tall big. It would be better to grow them in planter barrels.

I have 4 coming in and may go ahead and order 4 more. I'll see if I can fit them.

I notice that the H-brew word for 'purge' in Psalm 51:7 is not the normal word for cleanse, or purify, which would be barar, or taherah.

Instead, David writes tehateni from hata. This word denotes suffering a loss or an emptying. It means something more like the Greek askein from whence we get ascetic.

And the herb performing this tehateni is Hyssop, specifically Origanum syriacum. This is basically a species of Marjoram. We already knew that regular Marjoram (Origanum majorana) was an anaphrodisiac, but is David here actually using Origanum syriacum as an anaphrodisiac during his period of fasting and repentance? I can make no other sense of the text in context.

I ordered Origanum syriacum simply to add to my Biblical herbs, but since this 'Hyssop' would better be translated as Marjoram, I may end up adding it to my anaphrodisiac list for its medicinal properties. This is not Anise Hyssop as we think of Hyssop. This is Syrian Marjoram.

I can find little on the medicinal uses of this herb in the commentaries. They generally just gloss over it like David didn't say it, but David did say it and didn't gloss over it. There is a secret power to this herb. I want to discover it. What does it do? How is the spirit of the plant characterized? I will have to do some experimentation as there is nothing in the specifics or herbals. I can start with the literature on the ancient uses of Marjoram.

3-6-22

I try to keep this gardening journal drama free and a community area for sharing gardening progress and/or tips.

However, in light of recent events that have developed since at least the 18th of February in Ukraine and the current Russian conflict in that territory, trade and sanction wars have broken out internationally.

Hungary will not be exporting any grains this year. With Russia and China no longer shipping raw materials for fertilizers, it is 100% certain that the United States will see grain shortages and skyrocketing prices.

Being that this is the case, I'll be adding an entire wildcrafted bean patch this monsoon season consisting of nothing but tepary beans.

If you live in the southwest, I suggest you plant all the tepary beans you possibly can and harvest to stock your own supply.

Tepary beans are native to the Sonoran desert and can grow on monsoon rains alone. They are perfectly adapted to drought and arid conditions and will produce with little to no rainfall.

If you have a stock of tepary beans, I suggest you plant everything you have this season even if you have to wildcraft it on public lands. I know an area that is on public lands where no one ever goes. It's not far from a river. There are scrub flats out there that will support tepary beans. And that's where I'm putting them.

With wide spread grain shortages coming this year, gardening beans, Amaranth, maize, and winter squash or pumpkins will become far more important than it may have been even a season ago.

If you live in the southwest, I once again urge you to get some tepary beans on order right now as they may well be out of stock by monsoon season. I suggest some Sonoran white teparies like I have as they are vigorous producers and very drought tolerant.

You don't water tepary beans. Just let them grow with the summer monsoon rains. Else if you do water them, water only minimally. You're going to need to a food stock for this coming fall and winter. Tepary beans are nearly a fool proof way to stock the pantry.

Ended up being half and half garden soil to regular native sand with 1/7th rock. It will make a nice little Mandrake patch.

Ok, I'm going to make filling ollas stupid easy.

Just take some small terracotta pot plates and drill 1/4 holes.

Cut 1/4in tubing about 3 inches for each olla cover. Attach a 1/4 sprayer on each.

Then attach a T attachment to each and you've just made the easiest olla filler in history.

I've seen some very complicated methods of doing this online.

This method is stupid easy.

Ok, that took a grand total of 30 minutes to install.

If you feel like doing it the hard way, be my guest.

However, I think you might like this method.

Practically speaking, we'll want to keep the ollas topped off every day until the seedlings become established. About half way through the growing cycle, the watering can be cut back as the roots will be deeper.
