I've been to Machu Picchu twice, AMA
I am a mere PLEBE compared to those who have dozens of visits under their belt.
But if you haven't been there and are thinking of going, I could answer some questions.

I'm sure the other glpers who have been there would answer questions that I cannot....

Is that the one that is on a steep mountain top that they altered from top to bottom? Stepped and made to plant crops all the way around? True human beings once thrived and lived in this kind of harmony with our mothership.

really good question.
how the HELL did they do it??
even better question is how did HUAYNA PICCHU get there?
that was straight up a shear mountain from Machu Picchu.

anyway -- machu picchu --
the wall structures were sort of crumbling but still had lots of material left on them for roaming around and exploring, imagining the one building was a "lookout" tower, another was a central "kitchen" area....

the roofs of the "houses" were gone because apparently they were some sort of thatch?

no one really knows for sure, but the "GUIDES" at Machu Picchu will tell you they KNOW everything about it with full 100% certainty!
haha, the first time I went I didn't know this so the second time I had to laugh when I walked by the gringos who had chosen to have a "guide" and he was telling them complete b.s.
I use the term gringo affectionately because that is what my south american friends and I did when we conversed -- I do not mean that in any derogatory way.

I was in south america for a few years so by that time I was almost fluent. I remember giving that guide $50 that first time since there were several of us there -- and I didn't quite have enough Spanish yet to catch all of what he was saying, but he definitely had my attention as if he knew all! haha....

why so funny? because someone just came upon Machu Picchu. No one truly knows how it got there. the guides will make up all kinds of tall tales to entertain you on their thoughts of it though!

however, on my second trip, I took some time to talk to the older men who were "security guards" up there and took care of the alpacas who live up there.

They had some better guesses, but we are all guessing, really, since as I said, someone just FOUND IT one day....sorry I cannot recall that amazing person's name.

Can't even IMAGINE if I was just casually hiking in the Andes mountains one day and came upon it!! I'm 99% sure (fact check me on this of course) that's how it happened.
It's been a few years since I was there (2017 was my 2nd trip), so I can't recall all the facts on it, sorry.

easily found on wiki whatever that thing is, I guess!

oh and let me add another thing about "how I think they did it...."

no offense you glpers. I love you guys. Even some of the ac's!

but every post was about either that nonsense or some television thing and I haven't even owned a television in decades, so I don't give a shit what the "show" is all about.

was simply trying to redirect the conversation, that's all.

but you have an AWESOME day, sir. Hope all is well with you and yours. Peace.

Really people -- why take the time out of YOUR precious day (unless you are being paid to do this) to comment negatively when someone is merely trying to add something a little less negative and nail-biting, such as all that's going on in our world today?

Why bother?

Unless you're being paid to do it....and in that case, glad you have work, 'cause I sure don't.

whatever. some people get paid to be dicks, some people get to go to machu picchu twice.

rock on brothers and sisters, but geez, stfu unless you have something constructive?

I get it -- and I've probably done it. But I didn't even realize it until someone pointed it out to me.

If you don't like the thread, there's a whole SHIT load of others for you to choose from.....

now can I get back to my thread, ffs?

thank you!

...ok, deep breath, shakin' off the negative peeps that tend to be out there lurking, just waiting to pounce on someone that is not talking inside the box of their pea-sized sheeple brains....

ANYWAY -- haha!! HOW THE HELL DID THEY DO IT???

So when I was talking to those guards, the men who take care of the alpacas, I asked them why the HELL there were 175 stone steps to climb up before even getting up to machu picchu?

And WHy the HELL was each of those steps about 3 feet tall. it wasn't all manicured and easy to navigate, NOTHING like that at all.

(step up onto a chair right now -- your knee will end up at about a 90 degree angle, roughly, right before you step up onto the chair with both feet.)

Imagine doing that 175 times -- at Altitude no less!! haha!!
Yes, I'm pretty sure it was 175 steps, it damn sure felt like it by the time I got up there, that's for sure.
Will have to fact check that to be sure....it's been a few years....

anyway --

That was my main question. how did they think they did it?

their reply (and again, who really knows):
well, everyone knows that the giants built all of this...

I stood there with my mouth hanging open for a second.

Then I remembered the "guides" and how they had b.s.'ed me so all of a sudden I started laughing, as if I was "in" on their joke.

Only thing was, they weren't laughing. They looked at each other (there were two men) as if they were telepathically thinking "crazy gringos" or whatever.

Then they turned back to look at me and I saw the seriousness in their expressions.

How did they do it? I have no freaking clue.
they would have had to carry all those rocks UP all those freaking 175 "steps" that were built by whom?

(These were not little steps by any means, they were LARGE pieces of stone, kind of winding back and forth until you got to the top of the mountain.
But that is what those men told me that second trip.

It blew my mind to the point that I didn't even say another word for about 3 or 4 days. To anyone. About Anything!

Everybody knows the giants did it? HOW and who is everyone? How do they know?

But the thing is, those STEPS!! No FREAKING way a few humans with an alpaca or two placed those steps there. No way.

So how did they do it? Good question.

I've never researched "giants" extensively, but from what little research I've done on them, they would have been big enough so that those steps would have been like "normal" steps for us little tiny human beings!

Blew my mind for real. Not saying I BELIEVE those two. Maybe they were playing a joke....but I did ask my friend from Argentina what he thought and he gave me a very similar answer that gave me chills. He'd said it almost word for word the way those men up on the mountain did.
But this was someone I knew, a friend!

maybe it is just their folklore down there, I will have to go back at some point and do more exploring and investigating....

Thanks for the awesome questions!

wow, another great question. and omigoodness, I have to look into that because it might explain those huge steps and the folklore I heard while I was there. Thank you!
Ollyantambo! Si! Only passed through there, so don't know much about it, sorry....

It is a good bugout location, imho. Cusco, the Sacred Valley areas are Gorgeous!

but there are a couple of caveats I would throw in there --
if you are a woman alone, NO. Unless you are some kind of woman ninja and are fluent in Spanish, and then GO FOR IT!!

If you are a couple, or a few people who are in Very good physical condition, have some self-defense training under your belt, at least a little bit of Spanish, some confidence in yourselves and know how to protect yourself from pick pockets, etc., know how to "negotiate" with the police when they come knocking on your door (and they will if a gringo moves into their town, trust me)....

Please don't misunderstand me!
the people there are Dirt Poor.
Literally most of their houses have dirt floors.
they have nothing. but they have a lot of passion so they tend to have lots of mouths to feed and the men have (at least) two women who need their attention....and sometimes that leads to the men being pushed to go out and do whatever they have to do to feed all those mouths. just sayin'.....

It NEVER happened to us, but we heard MANY stories of people who'd been robbed or home break-ins that were violent, women were raped up there by Sacsayhuaman (just above Cusco), etc.
I've personally been very well trained and have been traveling for most of my life, so I was already pretty street smart by the time I got to south america.

If you show your confidence and you're not some clueless gringo, standing on the corner, looking at a map, with no Spanish, trying to find help....if you are THAT, I will tell you right now that you are a TARGET at that point and there is definitely at least one set of eyes observing how to take advantage of your cluelessness, if not 3 or 4 sets of eyes...to me, that is Self-Defense 101. To NOT be that clueless American tourist.

I was confronted ONE time in a tiny little beach town called Mancora, just south of the border of Ecuador.
Awesome surf break there!! Seriously. and it's almost 365 days per year that it is surfable and fun.

anyway....I was confronted on a side road and I automatically went into some martial arts training move I'd done years before (sometimes it's just muscle memory, reflexes) and pulled the police baton I'd been carrying in my back pocket out.

I don't know if you've ever used one of those, but when you pull them out they extend and make a sharp "snapping" noise.
That was enough to scare the guy off as he ran back to his friends saying "look at the crazy gringo trying to kill me!"
haha! it wasn't funny at the time, but it is now!

my point is, they are not violent people, by nature. sometimes they are, out of some necessity that we are unaware of, so if you make yourself vulnerable, you will be a target.
But if you are confident, can at least speak some Spanish, they will always smile and be helpful.
They are looking for weakness, not strong people.
They don't want any confrontations, just your money.

it's not downtown USA main street. not even close.

HAVING said all that -- there are some VERY GOOD and Very gifted people there!
The Peruvians are amazing people who have so much more knowledge than we Americans do, for sure.
Their "traditional" education levels are low, for certain, but their life experiences are rich and the young people we met there in their 20s and 30s were so much wiser than our American friends (and some of us too, who were a couple decades older than that at the time) on many topics.

But this is too long and I'm rambling. Sorry! I miss Peru!

They are not all out to get you, but sometimes it feels that way because they will ALL engage you, trying to get you to buy something from the huge bundles of stuff they are carrying.
(the women particularly are incredibly strong. they carry huge sacks on their back and have a new baby that is wrapped up in sort of a hammock fabric that they tie to the front of them -- while they are WORKING!!)

The Shamans in the Sacred Valley have helped people from all over the world overcome all kinds of "deathbed" illnesses. People sent home to die, went to Peru instead.
Lived for another 30 years after that.....
at least that is the stories I heard while I was there.

maybe they were exaggerating? idk.....I do know that it enriched my life significantly and taught me many life lessons that I otherwise never would have even knew were obtainable, if that makes sense....

La Tienda!!

haha, that is what they call the little stores.

I didn't do the whole Inca trail, only a small part of it, and there would be periodic "convenience stores" called Tiendas here and there....however, sometimes here is VERY FAR from there, so if you're gonna do it that way, get as much of your supplies for your trip while you're in Cusco, before you head up to Aguas Calientes (which is where Machu Picchu is located).

They do have quite a bit in Aguas Calientes too, there's a market there, but I've also seen landslides happen that close roads for days at a time and no trucks get in or out until that road is cleared.

I would answer it as, every stop you make along the way, be sure and re-supply yourself....even if you're doubling up somewhere, you may need it, depending on how much weight you want to carry and all. It's a lonnnnnngggg journey that is NOT like going on a manicured hike like in a state park!!

woohoo! Love that spirt of adventure though! backpacking in!

Hope you're in good shape!! Cusco is about 11,000 feet in elevation but Machu Picchu is "only" at about 9,000 feet, I believe, it's a little lower in elevation and a little warmer than it is in Cusco. So you will have to consider having layering (clothing-wise) and at least one rain poncho.....

if you go let us know!!

pronounced sort of like coo-ee is what they call it.

omg, I will never forget the moment in Ecuador when I turned the corner in a market and there was that little guinea pig, all fried up and on a stick, looking up at me!!
Poor little guy.

I'm not a vegetarian, but I never did bring myself to try it. Didn't even realize it was a "thing" until I saw that time in Ecuador near Vilcabamba and an Ecuadorian friend told me it is their favorite delicacy....haha!!

how did you know about the guinea pig? You've been there!!
