Very well done, esp Barrymore's performance as a sinister musical maestro who controls a young singer's voice and life. I noticed at 2 different points in the movie Svengali clearly made the Devil's Horns sign - index & pinkie up, middle fingers down. There was no reason in the plot for him to be doing this. I was actually shocked to see this from so far back and the character was a Satanic type character. Barrymore himself led a very "colorful" life preying on young women and killing himself with drink, but a very great actor. This Satanism has been going on, esp in the "entertainment" field, for a VERY LONG TIME. |
