Know where it is, how fast its going, aerodynamic cross section, decay rate.... They know. Not telling is telling. |

(an American pickup truck weighs 2 to 3 tons) -most people on the forum are too young to remember the re-entry of Skylab but it was huge back in the day, on the news every day. This was 40 years ago and it was the largest thing ever to re-enter the atmosphere. This new booster is way bigger. But it should make for some spectacular viewing as parts of it burn. I hope I can see it. Last Edited by Doctor Congo on 05/01/2021 01:06 PM |

[link to www.history.com (secure)] In June 1979, as the crash approached, Skylab-inspired parties and products were all the rage in the United States. The imminent crash of Skylab midway through 1979 coincided with Americans’ declining confidence in their government. The stagnant economy and a second oil crisis dropped Congress’ approval rating to just 19 percent that year. Perhaps it’s no surprise, then, that many people took an irreverent view of the demise of Skylab, a government project. The Associated Press reported several instances of “Skylab parties” occurring across the United States. In St. Louis, Missouri, the “Skylab Watchers and Gourmet Diners Society” announced plans to view Skylab’s last orbit during a garden gathering at which “hard hats or similar protective headgear” were required. The Charlotte, North Carolina, News-Observer reported that a local hotel designated itself an “official Skylab crash zone (complete with painted target)” and was holding a poolside disco party. Mocking NASA’s inability to say precisely where Skylab would land, entrepreneurs across the country sold T-shirts emblazoned with large bullseyes. Another enterprising individual took a different tack and sold cans of “Skylab repellent.” |

I remember an Australian putting a huge amount of pillows on top of his camper. People were sure having fun with the re-entry. And it did rain pieces down on Australia as predicted. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 71365124 Because its not and the acceleration occurs in the opposite direction. While a rocket is traveling up into space and still in the atmosphere it is moving relatively slow, a falling orbiting object is moving at near orbital velocity, and isn't slowed down until it enters the atmosphere as it falls. In other words a rocket launched from earth accelerates slowly enough so that while it is still in the atmosphere it isnt moving fast enough to burn up |

Quoting: Annie Oakley If it hits a city how far would the damage stretch? A couple of blocks? It wouldn't be that big of deal, the odds are it wont actually kill anyone. I'm not saying it isnt possible, just unlikely. Think of just your own yard, how it could fall in your yard and not hit you. Now imagine the entire surface of the earth, most of which is water. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 71365124 It is not! A rocket when it goes up uses the earth's rotation with extra thrust and burns for a few minutes and only reaches the highest speed outside the atmosphere. An object in free fall has accelerates all the time until it reaches the ground and will have its greatest speed when it reaches the atmosphere |

I'll be watching the sky this evening just in case. It is going to be warm and clear. There is no doubt that this will be a spectacular show. And China will be sending up more of these super boosters in order to get all the pieces of their space spy station into orbit. This could happen again. |
