How do I look up a phone number for free?

I generally do not answer unknown numbers because I get an annoying number of spam calls. I usually try to look up the number to see if it's a legit number and who it is. If it's a known spam number then it'll show up as that but otherwise I'm always directed to a paid service. Is there a way to do this without going through a paid service?

Just call the number back,it is probably not in service, as these scams can get around the caller id on your phone,just make sure it is not a 1-800 number

And at the beginning it was fun, but after I discovered that I was stalking a man after I called him at work, it's started to be a big problem for me.
