Well, a new study suggests that maybe this is not the diet that ALL our ancestors prescribed to! In fact, ancient Egyptians ate a primarily vegetarian diet. By studying the hair of ancient Egyptians, a team of French scientists were able to determine that Egyptians ate a primarily vegetarian diet on a very consistent basis. Given the abundance of resources available to this particular ancient civilization, it appears that a vegetarian diet was more of a choice than a necessity. The article published in “Inside Science,” explains that, “eating lots of meat is a recent phenomenon. In ancient cultures vegetarianism was more common.” But this is not to say that the ancient Egyptians weren’t eating meat because they didn’t have ready access to it everyday (the way we do), scientists highlight the fact that fishing was a common practice along the Nile. And yet, scientists did not find fish proteins in the Egyptian diet, but rather it just seems that a diet high in fruit, vegetables, and grains was part of their cultural tradition. Living alongside the Nile River, Egyptians were provided with all the nutrients they needed to have abundant agriculture, allowing their vegetarian diet to flourish. Scientists were rather shocked that over spans of hundreds of years, as the Nile region grew more arid, Egyptians were able to adapt their agricultural practices to maintain a strict vegetarian diet. When the Nile receded, all they had to do was move the crops closer to the water…what a concept. Looking at our current diet and current system of industrialized agriculture – along with the rising water shortages, environmental impacts, and harm done to animals – it seems like we could stand to take a page from the Egyptians and make a cultural shift to a plant-based diet. After all, the ancient Egyptian civilization was able to thrive for thousands of years, so what are we doing wrong? Paleo diet comes from old Stone Age. Before grains were developed around twelve thousand years ago. So it's a bullshit spin. Of course the Egyptians were eating a lot of grain, especially the poorer classes. |

By analysing the carbon atoms in mummies that had lived in Egypt between 3500 BC and 600 AD, the French research team were able to determine that ancient Egyptians were largely vegetarian. The analysis was carried out on the remains of 45 ancient Egyptians that had been sent to two museums in Lyon, France during the 19 th century, and involved a cutting-edge technique involving the measurement of carbon ratios taken from bone, tooth enamel and hair. We had an approach that was a little different," explained Alexandra Touzeau, who led the research team at the University of Lyon. "We worked a lot with bones and teeth, while most researchers study hair, collagen and proteins. We also worked on many different periods, with not many individuals for each period, so we could cover a very long time span. All carbon atoms are taken in by plants from carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by the process of photosynthesis. By eating plants, and the animals that had eaten plants, the carbon ends up in our bodies. Analysing this carbon can actually reveal what a person has eaten. The results revealed that the ancient Egyptians were mainly vegetarian and their diet was primarily wheat- and barley-based. Cereals, such as millet and sorghum, formed a minor part of their diet (less than 10 per cent). One of the most unusual discoveries was that there seems to have been little fish in their diet. Most people would probably expect the ancient Egyptians living along the Nile to have eaten a lot of fish, and archaeological excavations have found mummified fish in large quantities. However, at least in the 45 individuals studied, fish was not prominent in their diets. "There is abundant evidence for fishing in Egyptian wall reliefs and models (both spear and net fishing), and fish shows up in offering lists. There is also a lot of archeological evidence for fish consumption from sites such as Gaza and Amama," said Kate Spence, an archaeologist and specialist in ancient Egypt at the University of Cambridge in England. "All this makes it a bit surprising that the isotopes should suggest that fish was not widely consumed." In ancient cultures vegetarianism was much more common, except in nomadic populations, and eating meat was a development that occurred more recently. |

The so-called paleo diet is grossly inaccurate. SOME peoples consumed very very high levels of meat and fish and were quite robustly healthy. Most ate wtfever they could get their hands on...often they would over consume items too high in sugars like certain nuts and fruits leading to very poor health outcomes. Paleo diet.....which has now turned into the "substitution diet" with "paleo pizza" and "paleo sweeteners" in everything.....almond flour is very nearly toxic, agave syrup is BS as is monk fruit. Honey was VERY difficult to come by and acquire. It is annoying that every "diet" tries to replace junk food with some version modified to be keto or paleo or whatever. Primal paleo would be as much fat, marrow and organs as possible eschewing muscle meat in favour of the above. Mussels, clams, fatty fish produced incredibly strong and healthy bodies. Most people do exceptionally well on carnivore diets... |

They only way they can surmise what ancient Egyptians ate, was from Mummies. Now who were mummified? Not the common people, but the rich, mostly the Pharaohs. So we are not talking the average Egyptian diet, but the Pharaoh's diet. Just like most Americans don't eat like their Politicians or the Rich do. The logic of this article is greatly lacking. There is an added feature that was not included in the article; that based upon these mummies, their average life span was only to about 40 years old. Different lifestyles between classes, requires different diets. Both in terms of the physical labor involved in daily life and in terms of cost and personal choices. You can't believe these people, but the stupid sheep eat this stuff up. |
