This is actually old tech that I have been following for over 10 years. Gemesis was doing it back in '08.

They use a diamond substrate, but then use chemical vapor deposition techniques to layer it up atom by atom. They actually come out more perfect than mined diamonds.

It's how they can tell they are fake, just like synthetic emeralds. They're "too perfect."
