Easy. Liability. So if you for some reason down the road you complain that a root canal was not performed, this dentist has proof that he recommended a root canal, thus he won’t be liable.

Don't say you don't beleive in root canals. You sound like a nut.

Say you are concerned that a root canal could leave a stelath infection and you wouldn't be able to sense it. Also let them know that the crowns often need to be reset and that you would rather just have the tooth pulled and believe it's the better option.

Personally I've had one root canal and it's been fine (as far as I know).

Your best bet is going to be an oral surgeon at this point to pull it. Root canals imo are garbage so you made the right call.

Re: Something weird happened at the dentist today.
So I took my kid to the dentist today and the dentist said she needed a root canal. I said nope, I don't believe in root canals and i wanted him to just pull it. He said out of good conscious he would not. Then a dental assistant passed by the door and asked the dentist if everything was okay and asked if he needed someone in the room with him. We were just talking so that was weird. Then the dentist left and said someone would be in to bring me referral papers.

I hadnt raised my voice or anything. Then a dental assistant walks in and lays a professional walkie talkie looking think down on the counter. About five minutes go by then someone walks in with a piece of paper and says... So you are refusing to get the root canal because you don't believe in them and then paused and looked at me. I said in a very low voice "and"... She then looked down at the papers and said so we are referring you to so and so. She handed me the papers and I walked out the door.

Why in the world did they set that walkie talkie down. I assume it was to record me and that the lady giving me the papers was trying to get me to admit to something. That's why I just said "and".

Oh, and I can't find a dentist that will just pull her tooth.
 Quoting: Stella Wayten

Stay away from this dentist. Although I know root canals are not the best, I am not opposed to them. However, I totally respect your decision.

They likely will be sending you a letter within the next few days telling you that they are dropping you/your family from their practice and that have 30 days where you can come to them for emergency attention but after that you are on your own and need to find another provider. Most all doctors and dentists are ego-maniacs; they don't like people to question or disagree with them. Good luck.

Get oil of oregano, put it on the tooth 3 times a day. It may take two bottles. It worked for me, but I'm not a doctor and this isn't medical advice.

Re: Something weird happened at the dentist today.
In there the interim while you find a dentist/oral surgeon, consider trying to teach your child to do oil pulling with coconut oil. It really helpful in drawing out infection/germs. Not saying it will necessarily cure or save the tooth, but it may stop the spread of infection.

However, dependent upon the age of your child, be careful as they can aspirate the oil if it is not done correctly.

Turmeric paste may also help.

Re: Something weird happened at the dentist today.
Way too many dentists are crooks. Whether they start that way or become so, I am not sure.

People are brainwashed to think they need someone to scrape and poke at teeth every six months. They jam about with the probe spike introducing cavities. Outside teeth straightening braces, the only way they can earn money is with procedures involving the drill.

Avoid dentists and avoid continually bathing your teeth in sugary drinks, sweets and food.

There are no need for such frequent check-up's and teach children about dentist use of the probe even the SLIGHTEST rough treatment (scraping, scratching, hooking and especially pressing into the molars). Make them use their eyes and mirror and scratching should be MINIMAL.

Walk out if necessary.

I've had a broken tooth for five years (one that had been drilled away in my youth). It has not caused me any pain or discoloured - just a slightly annoying sharp edge.

This was my post. Oil of oregano will also help with the tooth pain while killing any infection. Immediate relief, at least it did for me.

Find a dentist that takes Medicaid. You don't have to be on Medicaid, but the dentists that accept it are the ones that will pull teeth with no mention of root canals.

What's crazy is they pretend to care so much but then they can't seem to do anything about a hurting tooth until you come in and let them examine it and then they have to make another appointment that will be weeks later to do anything. The dental industry has turned to trash since I was a child.

So true. I had a horribly painful tooth ache as a child at the same time I had the chicken pox. My dentist still took me in and pulled the tooth. No dentist today would go near anyone with chicken pox.

they want the money, thousands for a root canal, couple hundo for a pull

move to wisco, we have some tight dental care for people

dentist i went too, siad ull it, its the best choice in the long run, saud otherwise headaches till you die

if its the main molar, i can see his concern, but if its the super back one. (31). then let it go. is my opinion

i went to another place before the one that really cared, all they supported was the expensive procedure, and really using words to push the more complicated work, like root canal, caps,

OP, ^this^ may be the best advice given if the tooth must be pulled.

You have a computer or you would not be posting; a search of GooGoo or your favorite search engine for a "dentist near me that accepts medicaid" will yield numerous results.

Wow, that is scary.

Clearly they were making a recording to be used in Court.
Either
A) to defend themselves to prove they recommended a root canal, or B) to take custody of your kid if they could get you saying something damning on tape.

And they were making sure a witness was in the room also.

I would not ever go back there.

There are dental colleges that might be easier to work with?

Did they get pre-approval from he insurance plan you have? The insurance company makes the final decision on what’s necessary. I’d ask for a pre- approval to make sure dentist’s prognosis warrants root canal, X-ray could show otherwise and insurance would then deny it. And in the case you actually did have the work done, you’d have to pay out of pocket.

I’d ask for insurance pre approval jut to make sure dentist not just trying to do an unnecessary procedure.

Then at least you have second opinion by the insurance, they only allow what’s absolutely necessary and they may say your child’s tooth is not in need of a root canal. Then the dentist has to offer another alternative to treat the pain.

Be REALLY CAREFUL, OP. What they wanted to do was call Child Protecton on you and say that you’re taking irrational decisions for your child that are the equivalent of abuse. It’s happening more and more where a parent decides not to do a root canal or not vaccinate a child and it results in child welfare taking them away.

At this point, I keep my children away from any and all medical professionals unless I have a very good relationship with them.

somewhere (not on the site though) the book is available online for free... search for it...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79026702

I believe you can cure tooth decay, but the diet proposed in the book is too high in vitamin A. Of course you could still do it for a short time and not have a problem. But I think it is a major issue with the book. Very sadly, the author did not know this. (And he died young. Another similar naturopath, Dr Ron Shmidt retracted his ideas about cod liver oil before dying)

I'm not super well versed in the different alternatives. But here are some I wonder about. You could try a hydrogen peroxide protocol. Maybe antibiotics could help. I've heard raw milk helps.

The book author relies on Weston Price's ideas. Price did cure tooth decay in kids with a very good diet. You could follow his advice but just not give cod liver oil or supplements that contain vitamin A. Even Price knew that cod liver oil could be dangerous. Too bad Price didn't realize that vitamin A builds to toxicity over time.

Anyways, I suppose that isn't your issue right now. You need to cure the tooth. Once it is pulled or root canalled you cant.
