Frankly, the idea that the US could successfully wage conventional warfare with China in the South China sea is ridiculous. Even if, by the numbers, the US had a slight edge in military hardware, projecting all of that military force so far away from home is extremely difficult and filled with problems, and the US would need all of it to have a chance at breaking even with China. A single carrier fleet just isn't going to cut it, it would be obliterated in moments. Meanwhile, China would have none of those issues as they are operating on their home front. China would have all of their tools available to them.

This would be true if it were the other way around, as well. If China tried to wage conventional warfare on the US mainland, they would be quickly annihilated.

So, I think the idea that the US would even try to send soldiers and draft people to go to conventional war with China is not a possibility.

The most that will happen between the US and China is a small limited skirmish, followed by a hasty retreat.

If it escalates beyond that - if the US and China go to war - actual war - it will not involve soldiers with guns. It'll be settled with nuclear weapons in a single day.
