Learn a “Work from Home” Option!!

It's easy to tell parents to take their kids out of public school if they don't like it. I wish they would do it en masse.

But they've got us parents over a barrel.

They've made it almost impossible for people living in areas with decent schools to afford private school OR afford downsizing employment to accomodate state homeschooling requirements.

They sold us on moving to these good school districts.

I used to live in a rural area with crap schools and homeschooling was a GREAT option ... as you could rent a house for 500 a month and property taxes were negligible. No need to work as much, easier to make home school work ... no problem.

My mantra lately is .. if you can't staff the damn school you have to just cancel school and lat off the teachers and let the parents accomodate it.

If THEY remove the requirement for me to have my kids ready and able to learn in school very day, fine. I don't need or want their school. They don't even need to give me a property tax discount. My kids will learn just fine without their requirements.

If they are going to demand that I either have my kids ready and waiting for a school bus every day OR change our whole lifestyle to accomodate their homeschooling requirements, under penalty of prosecution, then they are going to hear from me this whole time until they can staff their damn school. Their fully funded school.

This is NJ, so it gets really touchy. the schools are the jewel in the crown most places, and the teachers union is the most powerful entity in the state.

People are getting really pissed. IF they don't have normal school come September, there's going to be a political bloodbath the likes of which got Christie elected for opposing the teachers' union.

I can't complain TOO loudly, because my own district isn't experiencing the staff resistance of neighboring districts. Some neighboring districts are only having half days because they can't staff lunch! And that's only been since the end of spring break - they were virtual before!

But it certainly sucks for our kids with these damn masks and plexiglass dividers. My daughter was recently quarantined for two weeks because her lunch buddy tested positive. The eat beside each other every day without masks. She didn't catch it.

Standing in the vestibule as the parents came to pick up the kids for their two week quarantines and the kids came out one by one, looking scared and sad ... we were talking about what we all can't for two weeks.

Can't go to girl scouts. No dance practice. Mother's day in jeopardy if they are sick, etc.

The security guard chimed in, "This is such a shame for them. Such a shame."

Kids can speak out.

But if you're an adult, how dare you.

As I said above in my too-long post ...

NJ is very touchy when it comes to schools.

We have 660+ districts for 606 municipalities. Each has its own administration and autonomy ... "home rule" ... unless a district is unable to accomodate its needs on its own ... then it's an "abbott district" and run by the state.

SO ... it an ultra-local issue. In a state that is full of micro-cities. It's the number one issue. Highly political. Chris Christie was elected SOLELY to stick it to the teachers' unions.

The districts have autonomy but have to operate under state COVID guidelines.

MY CHILDREN'S district has made a valiant effort to comply with state regulations and to keep schools open.

That's a GOOD THING because we have 5,000 residents in a very large rural area in South Jersey. 90% of our HIGH property taxes go to schools. We don't have a police force or any emergency services, no sidewalks, etc. Just schools and municipal buildings. We pay a premium for good schools. They know it, and they did ok. No revolt in our township.

They know that we live here and tolerate what we tolerate for a reason, and we definitely have our voices heard when it comes to schools. Like normal, upper-middle class white people who pay a lot of taxes.

5 miles away is a state run abbot district. No kid went to school more than two half days until two weeks after spring break ... because they can't staff the schools. Those Abbott districts pay 20-30% more for teachers and can't get enough to give kids lunch, so they went to 4 half days.

Those folks' taxes are incredibly high as well, and higher than ours because they have more services than schools. I don't know why they haven't revolted yet - my guess is EVERYONE has a teacher in their family, but it's brewing.

I've lived elsewhere with county-wide school districts.

It's glaringly obvious NJ does this with the schools and the property taxes to keep poor kids out of nice neighborhoods' districts. If we had county-wide school districts, we'd run the risk of foster kids from the city going to high school with the children of millionaires and ... that's why we cling to this ridiculously inefficient system and why we coddle teachers here.

It's been like this forever.

But, it's at a tipping point. Private school enrollment is up like crazy. No one will agree with more of this next year and if the state lets it go, they will vote Murphy out.

The NJEA is the most powerful union I've ever heard of. Not too long ago they spent millions just to lambast a Democrat - their ally - for hedging a little bit on funding issues and didn't care if the anti-NJEA candidate won. Just to give the guy the finger.

Exactly! I homeschool my 3 children who range in age from 5-10. It’s the BEST decision I’ve ever made. My children are safe at home with me & they are actually learning useful knowledge & skills. The best thing about it, is that they can learn at their own pace, which is beneficial. My 9 yr old daughter is behind in math, but excels at writing & reading. My 10 yr old son is well beyond his grade level in all work so his studies reflect that. We are just starting with my 5 yr old. She has a difficult time sitting still for long & gets bored easily, so I work around her current needs. We also schedule our school days around my husbands 5/2 & 5/3 work schedule, which means uninterrupted family time. We start early in the morning & are done by noon. I will never send my children back to public school.
