Who killed Benazir Bhutto? The main suspects by MSM
[link to www.timesonline.co.uk]

The main suspects in Benazir Bhutto’s assassination are the Pakistani and foreign Islamist militants who saw her as a heretic and an American stooge and had repeatedly threatened to kill her.

But fingers will also be pointed at Inter-Services Intelligence, the agency that has had close ties to the Islamists since the 1970s and has been used by successive Pakistani leaders to suppress political opposition.

Ms Bhutto narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in October, when a suicide bomber killed about 140 people at a rally in the port city of Karachi to welcome her back from eight years in exile.

Earlier that month, two militant warlords based in Pakistan's lawless northwestern areas, near the border with Afghanistan, had threatened to kill her on her return.

One was Baitullah Mehsud, a top commander fighting the Pakistani army in the tribal region of South Waziristan. He has close ties to al Qaeda and the Afghan Taleban.

The other was Haji Omar, the “amir” or leader of the Pakistani Taleban, who is also from South Waziristan and fought against the Soviets with the Mujahideen in Afghanistan.

After that attack Ms Bhutto revealed that she had received a letter signed by a person who claimed to be a friend of al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden threatening to slaughter her like a goat.

She accused Pakistani authorities of not providing her with sufficient security and hinted that they may have been complicit in the bomb attack. Asif Ali Zardari, her husband, directly accused the ISI of being involved in that attempt on her life.

Mrs Bhutto stopped short of blaming the Government directly, saying that she had more to fear from unidentified members of a power structure that she described as allies of the “forces of militancy”.

Analysts say that President Musharraf himself is unlikely to have ordered her assassination, but that elements of the army and intelligence service would have stood to lose money and power if she had become Prime Minister.

The ISI, in particular, includes some Islamists who became radicalised while running the American-funded campaign against the Soviets in Afghanistan and remained fiercely opposed to Ms Bhutto on principle.

Saudi Arabia, which has strong influence in Pakistan, is also thought to frown on Ms Bhutto as being too secular and Westernised and to favour Nawaz Sharif, another former Prime Minister.

All I can say is that didn't take long

This is just a list of the usual suspects. I think what is more telling is who is not on the list.

You never know right?

I mean if brits can be caught stirring up terror in Iraq, I think pretty much anything goes.

Re: Who killed Benazir Bhutto? The main suspects by MSM
*Benazir Bhutto's father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, was dismissed as Pakistan Prime Minister in 1975 and executed by hanging for conspiracy to murder a political opponent in 1979.

*Ms Bhutto wrested control of the PPP from her mother, Begum Nusrat Bhutto, while her two younger brothers, Shahnawaz and Murtaza, set up a militant group called al-Zulfikar, which orchestrated a string of bombings in Pakistan. They were both killed in 1985 and 1996 respectively.

*Shahnawaz, 28, was found dead in his apartment while in exile on the French Riviera. His family insisted he had been poisoned.

*Murtaza set up a breakaway faction of the PPP after he accused Bhutto of straying from their father's ideology. He was killed in a shootout with the Pakistani police.

*Although she and Murtaza were political rivals, on the night her brother died, Ms Bhutto ran to the hospital barefoot and wept over his bloodied corpse in the morgue for 45 minutes.

*Murtaza's Syrian widow, Ghinwa Bhutto, is the chairperson of her own faction of the PPP. She is estranged from her Bhutto in-laws and lives in Karachi with her son, Zulfikar Bhutto Jr, and her stepdaughter, Fatima Bhutto.

*Fatima, 25, is a columnist for The News in Pakistan and one of Ms Bhutto's harshest critics. She called the ordinance signed by Musharraf that quashed the corruption case against Ms Bhutto "the greatest judicial subversion that our country has seen in a long time".

*Fatima also blames Ms Bhutto for her father's death. Ms Bhutto's husband, Asif Ali Zardari, was arrested on suspicion of his murder in 1996. Although he was soon cleared, he remained in police custody for the next eight years on charges ranging from corruption to murder.

*Arguably the most hated man in Pakistan, Mr Zardari was accussed of amassing millions of pounds through corruption and kickbacks. Rumours of a £2.5 million Surrey mansion stocked with furniture and antiques sent by Mr Zardari from Karachi in crates labelled 'mangoes' were widely reported in the Pakistani media.

*At the head of the 700,000-strong Bhutto clan is Ms Bhutto's uncle, Mumtaz Bhutto. He refused to support Ms Bhutto on her return to Pakistan this year, saying she had betrayed the family name with her negotiations with Musharraf.

Seems like this is nothing new to this family.
