He said he lived there a year, not learned it in a year. I speak a fare amount of mandarin and only lived there a few years but hard to keep it up in the US if you don't live near good sources of friendly chinese people to talk to. I actually found mandarin fairly easy to learn because they don't have all the exceptions that english does, It fits a formula that is easy to remember. The vocab is the hard part to remember because there are so many new words. He has all the vocab down but fast speaking takes a lot of practice.

It would be cool to be able to speak these languages. Makes me think, though, how much we really do need a common language to better communicate with one another on this planet.

OP should hang out in L.A.'s San Gabriel Valley suburbs -- you'll see Chinese people talking to gardeners and tradesmen in perfect Spanish

His name is Xiao ma . I been learning mandarin the last few years . I like his channel. They are surprised when u speak with them. His vocabulary is better but I think my accent is better. Also his wife is chinese. Its easy but also hard. But I like writing the characters its relaxing. But you have to study all the time. I work construction I travel alot. So I just watch alot of Chinese Netflix to maintain. But im far from fluent. Also I speak Spanish. And a smidgen of tagalog

Chinese isn't a language, Cantonese, and Mandarin are the common languages of Chinese people. Grow a brian people!
