Historic low is 1071.x (2016) - we'll sail past that in about a week. The lake could drop below 1050 by October. No way they'd purposely shut off the flow. Our current drought monitor map is worse now - before official summer - than it was last year at the end of summer. The drought is serious business if people wish to accept it or not. Ask Ammon Bundy. Considerably worse. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 80403688 06/07/2021 12:49 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have followed the water levels of Lake Mead since the early 1970s. I am well versed in the annual, planned, increase, and decrease of water levels. In general, all news, and threads here regarding an ongoing disaster are total bullshit. This spring the issue is a bit more real. The issue is not a draught in the "west" (southern Nevada gets around 4.5 inches per year), but a lack of a good snowpack in the Rockies. This water year was bad but by no means the worst-regarding what matters-the snowfall. Amounts vary wildly year from to year. When you have several well below average snow pack years, the lakes will drop to such levels that emergency procedures kick in. Lake Mead has a required minimum release of 9,000,000 cubic acre-feet of water a year. That is a lot of water--not even considering that "full pool" is about 25,000,000 million acre-feet of water--a level not seen for decades. If the total release was reduced by even 5% 30 years ago, Lake Mead would be using the emergency spillways nearly every spring--instead of preparing for emergency shortage actions. It is a management issue more than anything else. The water use is for another thread perhaps. If one is interested in just how critical the water uses are, just read up on Saudi Arabian farms at Blyth, CA which gets is Colorado River water--FOR FREE so they can grow feed for their home nation. |

Deadpool is 895 feet, a level at which no hydroelectric power can be generated. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78689367 [link to mead.uslakes.info] In May it dropped 6.16 feet to below 1075 feet, a point which will induce water restrictions for Arizona. Once it hits 1045 feet California will be mandated for certain water restrictions. Likely farmers first.. which is kinda crazy considering - food! At a 6 foot drop per month it would be around 1048 feet by the first week of October. They had originally, early in 2021, said that they expected the water level to drop below 1075 in August this year but it happened last month in May. Seems like they are hoping for the best in a 22-year megadrought scenario - only 5 of those 22 years have been considered wet years. Never should of built major cities in the desert .. got the ocean i gues we better start piping it in and pump up desalination plants . I doubt we'll run the ocean dry .. The problem is humanity lets politics money greed bind them forever and ever never to move forward into a new age . |
