US Drought Monitor for August 10

Crops have been damaged by the lack of precipitation, with spring wheat and barley most significantly impacted. In primary producing states, 46 percent of the barley crop was in poor or very poor condition, compared to only 4 percent at this time last year. Similarly, about 60 percent of spring wheat in the primary producing states was in poor or very poor condition, compared to 7 percent at this time last year.

drought and floods run in cycles

i saw the Hoover Dam spillways opened in 1983 because there was too much water

that will happen again

Absolutely.

Scientists in the late 30's tried to tell the water managers that they need to be conservative. They didn't listen and instead ended up giving away more water than they had on paper to give.

The west is notorious for precipitation whiplash!

If they are needing water for an underground facility then they would have underground water piped in for they wouldn't know how long they'd be sequestered.
!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78689367

Agreed!

So where is that water coming from?
 Quoting: PeterWiggin

The problem is lack of water...see the title!

Not a DUMB thread.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78689367

Except that IF there are DUMBs in the area then they need water, yes?

Where would that water come from?
 Quoting: PeterWiggin

You are aware that there is water deep underground, right? That happens to be the "DU" in DUMB

Re: Hoover Dam/Lake Mead -- Western US Megadrought
Winter jet stream was a little farther north last winter

Plenty of snow pack in the northern Rockies

Hell it snowed in April in Missoula, MT

Dams regulate water levels

Low lake levels and scary maps will cause people to move

Hmmmm....
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77861588

You are full of crap. I AM in the N. Rockies, about a two hour drive to the Continental Divide to the NE, and about just as far to Canada to the NW.

We had a shitty winter, what little snow there was melted pretty quick, the Flathead River was way low in spring, and only has been up in the few times we did get significant rain.

So Missoula got a dusting in April, so what.

You have no idea what is actually happening.

About that time of year to re-discover how much snowpack the west didn't receive AGAIN this year folks.

Meanwhile in California..

Sierra Nevada snowpack disappearing after driest January-February in recorded history

Down to 64% as of March 1st - virtually the same as last years megadrought numbers.

Sierra's did receive snow today. They're going to need a lot more in the next 2 to 3 weeks. Amazingly, they were over 160% in December.

Re: Hoover Dam/Lake Mead -- Western US Megadrought
We just happened to visit it this week. I didn't know about the drought, but thought, hmmm. I thought the dam had more water. It seemed really low compared to movies etc. So, then seeing this thread, makes sense.

By the way. While driving around farmed lands, there were dust storms. Seemed really really dry. Tons of watering machines, but none running. So, most likely told can't use?

The level should be rising now, we have had a lot of warm weather.
It’s falling.
When the melt stops, it’s going to plummet.

If you are in Phoenix or Vegas, sell your house NOW!
It will be near worthless by October.

Following those charts, one would expect 1030 or less by November 1.
Less because the walls of the reservoir are not vertical. Every foot deeper, is less water as you go. Like an old fashioned coke glass.

What’s the cut off for the hydro electric again?
