Get a big pack pack. Brand doesn’t matter.
First put in a five pound bag of rice.
Then a small metal pot.
Throw in a couple pounds of coffee/dried meat/chocolate.
Throw in a belt knife and a folder.
Throw in matches and a fire starter.
Bottle of antibiotics and painkillers.
Quarter roll of duct tape.
Socks
Extra shirt and one pair pants.
Paracord
Silky saw
Small tarp
Wool blanket
Coat

That’s it.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69178036

Depends on location and skill level but this is a good kit.
The wool blanket has a 100 uses.

A light weight water filter and gloves would be worthwhile to add.

My kit is 45lbs topped off with ammo and some water.

Dude... it's already shtf. The foe was clever enough to initiate and sustain the attack without the majority even realizing there was a foe in the first place. You're not going to escape the slow smolder by fucking off into the woods and gathering the attention of the locals and forest service who will report some nutjob with a rifle skulking about and send the atf with some helicopters out to look for you. Get real bro. Get real.

At this point, it's best to consider the fight to have been lost. Delay and minimize damage, but there will be no meaningful resistance. Many people applaud their overlords, and beg for their chains to be tightened. They made allowance in the plans for the "hesitant," and the goal will still be achieved with or without your consent.

I hike and mountain climb a lot
I dont consider myself all-knowing, but I do have a bit of experience under my belt.

you can forget just about anything and still get by except:

water and proper footwear.

I carry filters and tablets. Tablets taste bad and no way to fix it, but better than nothing... a little sawyer filter is great. buy a couple, use one sometimes juts to be comfortable with it.

boots ...man could start a whole thread on boots alone... if youre not out using youre gear... youre wasting your time and money

Very good points ! For now the focus of this thread will be packs / bags and the contents , what , why and how to deploy and use what you have for maximum survivability.
May move on to other things in another thread . Starting with this one I will see how this goes over coming days .
Thank you for your input .

I'm using a USMC Military Surplus ILBE Gen II. Aside from the normal loadout I added a 19 quart (I think) garbage can cut down to fit inside the main compartment. It fills out all the space and gives you another container to collect water if need be. The space between the bag and the garbage can I store 9 contractor bags useful for many things. The can is wrapped a few times in duct tape also. Packed kevlar fishing line and "Shoe Goo" for expedient repairs. Looking forward to this thread. Thanks OP

Re: BUG OUT BAGS , E / E BAGS , SURVIVAL BAGS
So a bit of insight on a thought process I have about my own personal bug out bag system .
Years ago I read the autobiography of general Norman Schwarzkopf. In it he speaks of his command in Vietnam and how he learned how to supply his own troopers by observing how his counterpart with the south Vietnamese supplied their own men.

It's a 3 part methodology of sorts . The first supplies would be the E/E rations . High energy easy to consume , no or very little prep time . No fuss no muss so to speak . Supplies for E / E would include anything that would aid in rapid movement .
The second phase would be that which allowed a person with the luxury of a moment of time to cook or warm a meal . This second phase would also include supplies, tools and equipment that would allow for the building of temporary shelter. medical aid , repairs etc. . This phase also allows for the prep of gathered local game , and vegetation to supplement personal supplies .

The third and final phase includes tools , supplies and such that would allow for sustained residence at one location . O e would rely on the pack more for tools for the building of a more substantial shelter . Tools for the trapping, hunting , cleaning and cooking of local wildlife and the processing of vegetation and ultimately the cultivation of vegetation and animal husbandry.

A person should be able to use certain tools for multiple tasks . Such as a hatchet that had a hammer head on one side and blade on the other. You can build , butcher , even till soil etc.. all with one tool .

More on this tomorrow!

Re: BUG OUT BAGS , E / E BAGS , SURVIVAL BAGS
DAY 2 THE BAG continued

Quality of the bag is important for several reasons . Here are a few things to consider while building or shopping for your pack .
Several different times now I have used my pack as a dead man in both snow and dirt . I have tied into the upper handle on the bag to rope down a rock wall or face . Any bag I have I always reinforce the bag that it may be used for this purpose .

I have also buried my packs to keep them safe . If needed you want to have this option .

I have used my pack as a flotation to do river crossings as well.

My packs have been dropped from towers and ropes down from platforms , trees , cliffs , they have fallen off of rigs etc.

My packs have taken gunfire and protected me from literal fire . A cheap nylon bag will not provide protection in these cases .

In a SHTF scenario you can not predict what you will require of your pack.

I hope your starting to see it's not just the contents of the pack that is important. It's the pack itself that like any other tool can be implemented in other ways than just a pack or bag.

I will be back today to discuss compartments and accessory bag attachments.

Tomorrow I will start the focus on contents and their categories. Last night I briefly touched on a methodology of of supplies derived from the memoirs of general Norman Schwarzkopf. This I believe creates a good base in which to work off of. Short term grab and go , then mid term survival and finally the bag and contents should support a long term solution to survival .

Re: BUG OUT BAGS , E / E BAGS , SURVIVAL BAGS
If your pack is not water resistant you may want to consider conditioning it with a water repellent.

In my packs I do this but I also use a redundant containment for almost every item .

For example , a pair of sox will be folded as tightly as possible then vacuum sealed then placed into a sealable bag . This keeps the profile small as well as keeping the sox dry and free of mold or mildew . It also keeps the sox from possibly being contaminated by another substance such as gun oil . However the redundant containment on the gun oil should also keep a leak in place . This allows a person to keep valuable supplies as well as potential cross contamination.

These redundant sealable systems " zip lock bags " can be reused to hold gathered vegetation, berries, nuts , seeds etc. .
In a pinch a bag can be used as a barrier like a glove to assist an injured individual.

The thought here is that each component in your back has multiple possibilities for use and implementation.

Keep in mind also that these individual containment envelopes have a bit of air in them that will add to the buoyancy of your pack if the need arises. Some can even be intentionally temporarily inflated to create a very buoyant bag for a river crossing or the like .

Keep in mind as well that these little containment bags also cushion one item from another to assist in keeping your pack quiet . It will also cushion against your back or if the bag is dropped or hit this will also assist in keeping items from being damaged .

Welcome! It is a very interesting thread!
It would be cool to add some images or sketches, and i hope you will talk on how you do the packing and make levels, so you can find something easier and faster.
And what kind of bowls/mugs/cooking pots you could take with.

The redundant containment also keeps items safe from mold , bugs , dirt , moisture etc. . It will also aid in insulating your supplies to prevent freezing . Freezing temps can wreak havoc on containers filled with supplies that expand when frozen. Elevation differences may pop open containers as well. The redundant containment will allow recovery of what would have been lost and would have created an issue for everything else in your pack.

All this and much more will be addressed.

To answer your question about bowls , mugs , cook pots , I always use stainless or titanium. A single stainless cup can be used to cook in , boil water etc.. it's easily sanitized and if cared for should last indefinitely. It is multi functional . You cook with it as well as eat and drink out of it . You dont need multiple items , just the one .

I do not use or recommend aluminum , ceramic , plastic or rubber bowls , cups or cookware . Ss and titanium will stand the test of time .

Thank you very much for your input !

Not the least bit interested in bugging out, thanks; neither should anyone else be. You run, you become a REFUGEE, and refugees don’t fare well at all in a SHTF scenario.

Much better to trust in God, stand your ground and fight, like Shammah in 2 Samuel 23:12 fighting in his patch of lentils. You’ll either win or lose, but in any event you will eventually die anyway, and will be judged on your resolve and courage in your dire moments.

I’ve always judged most survivalists to be cowardly, as they seem so very afraid of dying... the last man left alive, so what? No one should fear their demise if they’re right with God. Make your peace with death, and most silly survival fantasies will rightfully fade away.

Just last year I almost lost my house to a Forrest fire . We were displaced for several months . Although we did not lose our home it came damn close . I could throw a rock and hit the closest tree that burned . Very close . The point is we were displaced for several months .

You just never know . And in these past few years , fires , high winds , flooding , extreme storms and events are becoming increasingly common place .

Hands down the absolute BEST BoB you can get for this and /camping/multipurpose is the Kelty Redwing 44- TONS of space and pockets, outside pockets and outer grooves to hold knife/machete...loops on straps and underneath for tent and compass /lights...

PLUS- it is the largest size bag allowed by the TSA for carry on on a plane- so ditch the weapons and you can travel with it. Pure Grey Man bag, I've had it for years and not a single hiccup. keep it under 20 lbs and you are good to go
