But it happened to me as a kid with no drugs.

A lot of people have experience episodes of this from time to time in their lives. Some drugs might even induce it.

Never heard of it. What are the symptoms?

The only time I am ever bothered by these sorts of things is when I sit down and the chair felt like it was further away than it looked, or even if sitting down, any time the floor feels like it’s dropped a bit, startles me. (Eta: occasionally feels like I’m on an elevator, but that is a rare sensation)

I might not have the visual aspect as bad as what would be required to startle anyone, and the visual aspect doesn’t upset me at all, but can be rather disorienting. The movement of still life into waves sometimes happens outside of the big/small incidents for me, and that is always trippy.

I’ve never taken lsd or mushrooms, so I cannot compare my experiences to such a trip.

I get this sort of thing at least once a month, but it is worse if I am under more stress than usual. One Church that I lived near, when I went, I would experience this about halfway through Mass. Everything gets very far away, and the only thing left in my vision is the priest and altar, and everything else is blacked out. Only one instance of this happening, I had a vasovagal reaction that coincided (I don’t recall the two issues lining up in the past, just on that occasion), and someone near me noticed something was up with me and asked if I was okay a bit later as we were leaving.

I had no migraines but I did run an extremely high fever once.

You're still getting it as an adult?

You're supposed to grow out of it by your 20s.

I had many intense episodes but not after the age of 20.

Yes. Ketamine.

I've never done ketamine or mushrooms.

I'd like to try shrooms one day but I think I'll pass on the ketamine.

Well, he was actually right and it was a relief to me.

Mushrooms will do this to ya. Once, not too long ago, I wanted something to drink a couple hours into a trip. However, every time I peered through the kitchen door from where I sat, the distance to the sink would lengthen such that it appeared that it would take hours to get to there. I ended up managing to get there and then literally yelled back to my husband, who was no more than 15 feet away, "Hey, now that I've finally gotten all the way over here, do you need anything?"

He still makes fun of me for it. It's one of the reasons why I tend to explain a mushroom trip as going through the mirror like Alice.

My 10 year old daughter has this. It terrifies her. I’m hoping she will outgrow it, as most children with it do.

It's a state of mind that causes it, not a misfiring or confusion of surroundings.

I have some symptoms of it. Especially with time therefore I am constantly setting reminders on my devices. Also colors; sometimes they morph into different shades. No drugs, etc.

That sounds like vertigo.

I really believe it's induced by stressful situations.

I know several people (and a dog) irl, who get it when their anxiety increases.

It's ironic because they don't see the connection between the two until I point it out to them.

You may want to see a doctor regarding your episodes; it could simply be vertigo or something more serious if it's happening often.

Regardless of what it could be, you don't want to put yourself (or anyone else) at risk for an accident.

The majority experience only a single type of distortion, e.g., only micropsia or only macropsia. AIWS has many different etiologies, and hence an extensive differential diagnosis. Its amenability to treatment depends on the underlying pathological process, which in children is mostly encephalitis, and in adults, migraine. In the literature, no more than 180 “clinical” cases of AIWS have been described (i.e., cases in need of medical attention).


I don't think they know what they're talking about in this paper.


My attacks were simultaneously micropsia and macropsia and it's a lot more common in children than they say.
