Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's wrong to tell people to improve their lives or learn a new skill.

It's just that I think people think programming is a simple and easy way to spring board yourself into making a boat
load of cash with a decent work life balance.

The days of being able to learn html and charge a decent amount of cash to build a website are pretty much over
because anyone can hire someone from Belarus or whatever remote part of the world to do the same job for a quarter
of the money.

To really make a career out of programming requires 100% of your being. It's not as simple as learning a language,
you'll have to grind and create projects, build relationships, network, etc., like any other industry. The
people who make it in programming, as I've seen at least, all seem to have a fiery passion for it.

They enjoy mundane tasks and taking hours to debug and sift through stack overflow just to get a computer to do
something. Most people aren't going to have that same passion.

So yea, telling someone struggling to make end meets to just "learn to code" is like saying "learn astrophysics" or
"learn medicine". It's something that requires a serious amount of devotion and commitment.

Coding well is kind of like flying airplanes. You had to want to do it as a kid and have a daily passion for it. Without that, you have shit code/logic or are a crater in dirt.

People need to learn to think, and if that thinking results in them learning to code then fine.

If you're too stupid to code, you can install solar panels instead!

I code for fun. Mostly microcontrollers.

I just don’t like commercial projects. Building an inventory or accounting system would be so boring.

If I had a programming job it would need to be something cool. Maybe for NASA.

Not sure how to get a foot in their door though.

hesright

Coding is an art form in some respects. It takes years to be competent enough in coding that's why 48 hours to code C++ books and crash courses of 6 months don't work. It will get you started but by no means you are competent enough to get a job doing it. The people that think you can learn to be a professional coder in 48 hours have never tried those books nor have they ever taken an even basic introductory course in C++ or any other code language. They know jack shit about about learning to code.

Learning to code is only for extremely intelligent people that are good at math.

It takes 5 - 10 years to get good.

Even jut becoming a web developer is very very difficult.

Leaning to code is like learning to draw. It takes years to become good enough at it that you can charge someone else money for your services. You don't become a professional Illustrator in 6 months anymore than you become a professional coder in that length of time nor for that matter a medical doctor or a nurse etc. This is not some kiddie crayola type job for dimwits where everything is dumb down, need no talent nor brains and can be quickly taught in 48 hours like you are going to be changing adult diapers in a nursing home.

Ivanka made that quote early in her father's presidency. She was not talking about computer language. She was talking about Gematria, Astrology, tarot, esoteric language. Put their quotes into the Gematria calculater, you'll see.

That's why it is laughable telling people with IQ's below a 100 who have been on welfare and unemployment several times in their life and have done all sorts of low IQ manual labor jobs to become a coder when they barely graduated from high school. You might as well tell them to go to medical school or become Physics Professor or the next Stephen Hawking.

Most people would struggle with learning to code using basic from the 1980's 8bit era.

Re: Telling people to just "learn to code" when they lost their job or want a better life is asinine.
It takes too long to become a professional coder so what are these unemployed people supposed to do in the mean time for work while they are learning to code? This long term goal of becoming a coder is not going to solve their immediate problem of finding work and way to support themselves and their families. Career transitions take time that is presuming most of these people had careers before this which is highly doubtful. Most people just have jobs not careers.

Nothing to do with intelligence either. YOU MUST LIKE IT....and who likes strings of code? autistic people.

in fact I never encountered a single programmer who was actually intelligent. They posses a typical linear logic. In fact if they are provided with fake information they keep repeat the error without considering there is something wrong in their premises

I am not saying competent programmers are all brilliant people but you do have to have at least an average IQ to do it even if you are autistic.
