A huge backlog at China's ports could spoil your holiday shopping this year
[link to www.azfamily.com (secure)]

A coronavirus outbreak in southern China has clogged ports critical to global trade, causing a shipping backlog that could take months to clear and lead to shortages during the year-end holiday shopping season.

The chaos began unfolding last month when authorities in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong — home to some of the world's busiest container ports — canceled flights, locked down communities and suspended trade along its coastline to bring a rapid spike in Covid-19 cases under control.

The rate of infections has since improved, and many operations have restarted.

But the damage has been done. Yantian, a port about 50 miles north of Hong Kong which handles goods that would fill 36,000 20-foot containers every day, was shut down for nearly a week late last month after infections were found among dock workers. While it has reopened, the port is still operating below capacity, creating a huge backlog of containers waiting to leave and ships waiting to dock.

The congestion in Yantian has spilled over to other container ports in Guangdong, including Shekou, Chiwan, and Nansha. All of them are located either in Shenzhen or Guangzhou, the fourth and fifth largest comprehensive container ports in the world. The domino effect is creating a huge problem for the world's shipping industry.

The Yantian backlog "is adding extra disruption on an already stressed out global supply chain, including the significant seaborne leg of it," said Peter Sand, chief shipping analyst for Bimco, an association of shipowners. People "may not find all they were looking for on the shelves when shopping for Christmas presents later in the year," he added.

As of Thursday, more than 50 container vessels were waiting to dock in Guangdong's Outer Pearl River Delta, according to Refinitiv data. That's the biggest backlog since 2019.

Gradually increasing tariffs would result in production jobs returning to the country. That is what we desperately need. The United States used to be an industrial powerhouse. We could easily become one again.

If we produced goods within our own country, things may be more expensive, but we would be far more independent and not subject to a doomsday scenario if global trade suddenly has a heart attack.

China is clearly an enemy of the western world. The idea that we should be dependent on an enemy for our production needs is utterly ridiculous. To those who think our current dependencies are a result of greedy people wanting more for less - wake the hell up. That is the lie that the ruling elite push on us. We found ourselves in this situation because the ruling elite deliberately weakened us and made us dependent. It was never about cheap goods. It was always about breeding weakness and creating dependencies! The ruling elite seek to make all countries dependent on others, so that no country can stand on its own! It's all for their ambition of their long-awaited one world government.

Resist to the very end!

All billionaires, banksters, and people in high-ranking positions of power (both public and private) who have not openly and strongly come out against woke ideology and globalism are our enemies - as are their minions. They are the NWO.

Buy what locally... a handmade picnic table maybe.

Everything is made overseas. It would take 20 years just to bring in the equipment and tooling to make anything here.

We are in very bad shape on this front.

Yes... I figured out how bad the problem was when all the the congress folks were wearing Chinese KN-95 masks at the inauguration.

3M has had a year to get it's shit together under the control of FEMA and we still can't even get 3M masks to Congress.

We are ducked.

People need to reassess what they need and what they buy for the sake of buying gifts and decorations. We need a lot less than we think we do and we waste more money on cheaply made frivolous items than we can afford to do. And those throwaway gifts usually end up at a thrift store or regifted or trashed because they are bought and given because we are supposed to give presents to everyone. Then we complain that China has too much power over us.

The past few Christmases we have been giving simple gifts, home made for the most part or at least locally sourced. I found an amazing dresser at a thrift shop. I refinished it and gave it to my grandson's wife, she loved it. My sister compiled all of the family recipes into a family cook book. Another sister knitted sweaters or scarves for everyone. One of the granddaughters got together with cousins and they made oil candles and soaps for everyone. The decorations are the same ones we have used for years, they are full of happy memories, and I still put up the same nativity scene we had when my kids were babies more than 40 years ago.

We also stopped doing the traditional Christmas dinner, instead we do a potluck. We had local salmon caught by family members, buns and bannock made by the women, salads, etc. We all noticed how we didn't get that heavy post turkey dinner urge to lie on the couch and do nothing. This year I have found some real gems that I will spruce up, things people will actually use or enjoy this Christmas.

What would happen if not one person bought one dam thing from the CCP?

Yes, the Chinese people would hurt - for a bit - but maybe they would wake up and realize they are all just factory workers, forever slaves, many with advanced degrees, stuck in a life of servitude and the CCP Social credit score tracking and punishment system.

Maybe a massive shift would take place for the people of China and their slave system would collapse.

How else will they ever be free if the world does not give them a little nudge in the right direction?

It's always hard in the beginning.

We will be in lock down before December anyways so it won't matter. Christmas will get cancelled again this year because the government has special hate on for religious holidays especially Christian ones or holidays that bring any joy to people's lives.

Shop at thrift/secondhand stores, antique stores, and yard/garage sales. Purchase items from local artisans. Clean out your closet, there are probably things you forgot you had in there which you can gift to others.

A simple search for made in America products will help.

Or, learn to make your own gifts. Lots of instructional videos out there.

Who really likes holiday shopping, anyway? Cold and flu season starts around the time people start doing their holiday shopping, so you’re just exposing yourself to that and all those Black Friday shoppers.

Yeah, one granddaughter made me a terrarium with local mosses and tiny plants the year before last. She was 12 at the time. I still cherish it. She put a lot of thought and love into it, she even found a little rock that looked like a carved head in it and a couple of interesting sticks. Way better than "I still have to get something for gramps so this will do" impulse buy just to get my gift taken care of.

Exactly!

I have been doing this the last 2 years. During the holidays, I tell gift recipients that their presents are coming from local farmers, craftspeople, etc. They love it.

I don't order from CHY NA anymore.

Also, I joined a virtual farmers market online. Local farmers joined forces with other merchants in the area, and sell their products all on one page- everything from produce to baked goods, garden supplies, small furniture, etc.

Keeps them in business and I know I'm getting locally sourced goods. Most towns have this now, you just have to look it up in your area.

Win/win.

Won’t spoil my holiday shopping. I give donations to the favorite charities of

Not to mention, in industrial sections of many cities, the hipsters with their trust funds bought whole former factories and converted them to their "lofts", or giant apartments, when that idiot gwb gave them deep deep tax cuts in the early 2000's.

So, no factories either now.
