The body and souls were already there. The Aessir/annunaki took an early version of a human preexisting on earth,think neanderthal, etc. and spliced it's DNA with their own, thus creating a worker race that they could communicate with.
That's us, the homosapien-sapien.

The reason they needed the gold, which humans were never meant to know, is that they eat it. Highly concentrated mono atomic gold in their food.
The gold will fix any cellular damage, restore your cells to new and keep you mentally fit, healthy and strong and as long you live, which could be 100s, if not 1000s of years as long as you keep eating the gold. It will also give your skin a golden glowing sheen, hence like a "golden god".
